    Cool Hexon versus dog nails

Jokingly, I told Dutch and the manager at trail days that I was disappointed in my last purchase. The buried lead was that it was all my fault, and not planning properly.

I had been talking about purchasing a hexon1.0 hammock, and that my dogs weigh just a tad too much to lay with me. A concern was the nails puncturing the fabric.

Well, I purchased Hexon 1.7,which has plenty of weight limit for my puppers. Now I am wondering if the 1.7 is still very susceptible to puncture, and if I still need to pursue something to protect my hang. I am considering a little cubby or dog hammock made from Tyvek. This also would allow me to get a semi wet dog or of the downpour without wetting all of my sleep system.

I’m using Hexon 1.7 with my 23 lb beagle sleeping in the hammock and haven’t had an issue. She is not very active once in the hammock so maybe that helps?

And theoretically I keep her nails trimmed but honestly I haven’t been that diligent in checking before we go camping.

I carry extra micro fiber towels in case she gets wet.

I have a 25 pound beagle, and a 45 pound lab. With me being 165, we are well within the limit, just worried about punctures. Thanks for the info of it working for you.

I don't have a dog, but I would worry about its nails because the 1.7 Hexon has a pretty loose weave. If I wanted to take a dog into the hammock, I would probably pick a fabric with a tighter weave, like 2.4 Hexon. Or maybe use dog socks?

Dog socks is an idea, kind of a funny one. I bet kids socks would be snug enough.

Personally, I would not chance ruining my hammocks for the convenience of letting my dog in. They have been perfectly content being out and about on their own and having their own accommodations. But then again, my dogs are not allowed on furniture at home either. I have never heard any of them complain, they are simply delighted to have found such great company as moi.

Having stated my personal dog philosophy, dog nails are sharp or likely will become sharp with wear, trimming, or undue exertion entering or leaving the nest. However I understand others prefer to cuddle up to a K9. I love my dogs, but my nose actually works to some extent and I am familiar with the practices that led to the phrase "dog rolling good". Dog booties are your only sure defense against holes, runs, and rips. Perhaps I shall invent a hammock constructed out of the same material as my S29 Ursack, kevlar I think?

If you get a double layer you can use a foam pad or refletix between the layers to keep a nail puncture from going thru both layers causing a failure and it is bonus insulation.

Lots of fear here. I mean I understand - i never had kids because I was afraid they might get candy on my hammock.

But has anyone actually had a dog actually cause a catastrophic hole?

My dog has witch claws and she's into and out of multiple heron 1.6 hammocks all the time with no noticable damage. She cuts my arms all the time, but never the fabric.

If she ever did cut a hole, well I'm not sure what I'd do.... Oh yeah I do... I'd buy another hammock.
