    Manure...serious question

I was hanging up my hammock and everything and taking in the wonderful Piney woods smell (left over from MAHHA) ...when I suddenly realize that at home in my backyard, it's not the Piney Woods that I smell ...its manure. So since I'm at home I guess I can bail. What would you guys do? I'm pretty sure I don't want my underquilt or top quilt to smell like poop. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. I think I am grabbing my downy underquilt and bringing it in the house...

    Manure...serious question

Has anyone had the manure smell cling to their underquilt or anything?

    Manure...serious question

Looks like the stillness of the night has dissipated the smell...heading back out to the hammock!

The only smell that seems to cling to my feathers is my own. So far, airing the quilt out after a trip has always taken care of it. I imagine washing would be the solution if ever that didn't work.

Thanks for the input! I imagine most camping trips I wouldn't have a situation like this! My underquilt is new, and I've never washed one before.

I set up at home in an area I call the Grotto. it's a stand of trees where our horse had always hung out for shade. He has been gone for 4 years now. I slept out in a light rain with a heavy fog and that horse manure smell permeated everything. I couldn't believe it was that strong after so many rains and snows.

It aired out, the smell dissapated in a few hours but I left them out for a day or two. After that there was no residual smell at unpacking from the stuff sacks. All good. Now I need a new place to hang in the rain...

Glad you were able to air out. It's the kind of smell that can really hang onto things!

Go easy on the reconstituted black beans and rice and leave the chili at home.

When I store my down items in their storage bags I always throw in a dryer sheet with them. That way when I pull them out later they smell like a fresh load of laundry.

A small bag of Baking Soda eats mild odors when things are stored.

Baking Soda breaks down easily, dryer sheets do not.

I use Baking Soda to clear odors, then I use it to clean stains or help keep my sink smelling clean.

I learned early on that a lot of plastic totes and bags have a strong odor of their own.
