Using a sleep mask really helped me.

I just got back from a weekend trip. Since it was the full moon, I decided to bring the sleep mask I use when flying over night. I figured it would help some since it would be so bright but I had never considered using one before and did not expect it would be a big deal. I slept the last 2 nights in my hammock better than on any previous trip. I have always slept poorly backpacking and never considered that the light was a major contributing factor. For over 10 years, my bedroom has had blackout curtains, so I always sleep in the dark, full moon or not. I'm very happy I figured this out. Perhaps this is already widely known by this community, but in case not, try it out.

I always carry a merino buff, it works great to keep your head warm and eyes covered.

+1 for the buff... double duty item!

Also, check weather websites for the moon phase. I've got an upcoming trip for which the moon is waning and won't be rising until around 3 a.m. and getting progressively later, so it won't be a problem. You really learn to think about these things with a .51 DCF tarp!

Another thing to consider... earplugs! Many times I've found that birds such as owls and whipporwills can 'go at it' all night long. And for the trip I mentioned above, it is in southwest PA and there is predicted for that area a huge cicada hatch, and those things can roar all day and night at about 90 decibels.

I take a blindfold and earplugs. Those Canada Geese always try to wake me up at 5:00 AM and I'm not having it. I may be the last one up in the morning, but I'm well rested.

I had one go off about a foot outside my tent once. Nearly lost a good sleeping bag!!!!

Oh, and in Florida...we got sandhill cranes for daytime naps.
