VIDEO: Wintry Overnight with Gear Mods

In February I got out to a local state park to do some winter backpacking and gear testing. I mentioned on another thread about modifying my UQ suspension and finding a more comfortable way to keep my feet warm, and I demonstrate these in this video.

It was a quiet hike except for a complaint or two about my Yak Trax and a serenade by a couple of owls, and I had a great time. I've camped in snow before, and I can now say unequivocally that it's much better in a hammock above the snow.

Anyway, I hope you all find this video informative if not enjoyable. Thanks for watching!

EDIT: Here's the link for those who cannot see the embedded version: Wintry Overnight

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful... because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience...." --Robert Traver

Very Cool ! ... Loved the concept of your vest covering your footbox. Glad to see it kept your feet warm all night. Good Idea.

    bonsaihiker,

Is there any way you could put a regular link to your video? For whatever reason, I cannot see it embedded in the post

    Nice video!
I use my fot pad for a lot of other stuff.

    1. Ground cloth, when i need to put stuff on the ground
    2. Sit pad on logs by the fire
    3. Insulate the bottom of my Alpacka
    4. Insulation in my Jerry chair

But i still think this idea to peapod your footbox is neat, gonna try that out.
I almost always carry a Wm flight jacket anyway.
But i wont ditch my pad

Ps, what the heck happend in the very end

Good vid Scott, thanks for sharing

I've just bought a down vest and was wandering about using it for the foot end, one to try next time I'm out.

Thanks Scott, always a pleasure to watch your hikes.
I did the same trick with my vest last weekend, except I used it on the head end, no net hammock. Works good that way too.
