I would not underestimate the temps in GA, NC, and TN in general and in the Smokys particularly in the winter. I have hiked in the Smokys in Jan and we experienced -5. Now I am sure that you can "acclimatize" to a certain extent. I have been in shelters with SOBO hikers and their bags were a lot thinner than I would have been comfortable with. However, I would still go for a 0deg set for a hammock if I was doing it that time of year.

Im a comfort guy. Personally I would go with 0 quilts and pay the extra weight penalty, or at the very least be well versed in vapor barrier use.

4,000', 5,000', and 6,000' elevations in the Southern Appalachian mountains in the dead of winter are no laughing matter for the unprepared.

You'd be going over the Roans, Big Bald and Smokies in the near dead of winter. It can easily get down to single digits on those mountains. I'd prepare for extra layers as the temps start dropping. I've camped all of those in the winter with a hammock, and I wouldn't do it with only a 20 UQ. But then again, I like to be warm. :-)

Good luck, and please update us with how your trip goes. Remember, it's your hike and if we sound nervous, it's just because we want the most successful outcome for you.

I have camped at Roan on Thanksgiving weekend and it was in the single digits plus a 40 mph wind. I would want a little more for insulation, especially on the bottom quilt, and also like others have said, maybe an uq protector, or wind block.

Also look into a winter tarp, for that extra warmth.

I must be a really warm sleeper, pushed my LLG 20 to 8 last winter just fine.

I would recommend you test your setup at home in winter 1st before having to rely on it on the trail.

I think you'd be much better served to start at the half way point, and walk south.

Start again in April to finish up.

If you get the whole trail done in any 12 month period, you'll qualify for the ATC 2000 mile club.

20 degree quilt still isn't going to be enough.

Do you have experience hanging in single digits F? You soon will.

Gonna recommend a 0 under and top for that time of year at the minimum. YMMV on all accounts. I can only assume you have a time constraint that is forcing the timeline you are proposing. As stated multiple times above, the Whites in October and the 5K to 6K peaks in the lower section in December/January are not to be attempted unprepared.

Please keep us posted on your final decisions and ultimate progress. My interest is peaked for certain but I live in the South and I hear, "Hey, hold my beer. Watch this." on the regular.

I was on My greylock one night in October in a warbonnet blackbird, 20 wookie and a 20 enlightened equipment quilt. I had a warbonnet minifly. The temps were slated for 30 overnight so I went. Froze my *** off all night. Some kinda weather moved in and we had a steady 30 mph wind and the temps had dropped to single digits. I wore my puffy and insulated pants. And that's just Massachusetts. I'd say pony up for the heavier insulation and consider your tarp too...

    Good luck.
