    NO-LINE tarp suspension

While working to utilize steel carabiners as pulleys in the ‘pulley&double-line tarp ridgeline’ system, I had an idea! Seems to work, going to continue to utilize this method until I see fit to change or use something else. Kinda neat, pretty simple.....and I can’t upload the video with the details until I get it to my pc...will update shortly...ok so for some reason i cannot upload the video to the forums, but i was able to create a youtube video:
    https://youtu.be/0HQ5M3tJzUI
hope you find it interesting or useful. its like a slimmed down version of the pulley/2line setup. maybe some other 'biners could work or be lighter, but at this time i am unconcered with weight as i have ACL surgery coming in june and don't get to 'outside' much this summer.

Noticed your connection to the top of 4 x 4 post in your car port. I hope you checked that out VERY CAREFULLY because when designed, that 4 x 4 was expected to only take a downward compression load from the roof - NOT a shear load pulling outward. If it does give way while you are in the hammock and a car is under the roof ... Just Say'n.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

agreed, and understood, i do my very best not to bounce and instruct all who hang that a hammock does not equal a swing and that both are built and designed to do things differently. i don't spend too much time actually hanging, just cute little rests while the kid plays ususally. mostly its the tarp up and we just sit and play campfire underneath it. thanks for your concern, however, i will be extra vigilant to ensure no one pulls down the carport. also, these are 4" steel beams i don't think we could pull them down one-man'd maybe if we fought the good fight with it and a few fat guys drunk fighting INTO a hammock would cause gravity to overcome the steel. none-the-less, extra vigilant!

Ah, STEEL beams. Yes, that "take down" would be more of a challenge.

Reminds me of the time (youngsters start running when I begin like that) when they were tearing down the Oregon Journal newspaper building in Portland Oregon. There's this crane with a huge wrecking ball attached. The operator skillfully swung the ball so it crashed into the side of the building - probably at a critical structural point to bring the building to her knees. Well, you can imagine that if a building was designed to hold the weight of several industrial printing presses, it would be pretty sturdy (concrete and re-bar). There was a huge impact - but the only damage was a "dent", about the size of the wrecking ball, in the side of the building. Onlookers cheered (for the building), then broke out in laughter. It took over a week to bring that building down and I think they had to bring in demolition experts.

you're right though, i bet if we tried, between a few determined guys, we could cause damages by yank-force. they ain't solid, and the concrete in this area (south eastern NM) is notoriously lame (though this is as of yet uncracked, surprisingly so) and as i said i don't spend too much time actually hanging on it. i DID nap for like two hours yesterday in the shade of my tarp and the silence of the children miraculously NOT playing.

if anything i ever do meets with the approval of The Phantom Grappler, my efforts have then already been rewarded.

Also, the knot i use on the tree straps to anchor the carabiner is called a klemheist knot, it’s a slide-n-grip like a prussic but it only grips one way. When you tighten it down really hard (like I did with the pulley and busted my zing-it line) it gets reaaalllyyy grippy (in this application at least) so to loosen it just a bit before you adjust you slip the beginning/1st loop back a little on the end/connection loop and work a little slack into the knot. Not too much, just a bit. Here’s the link for knots by grog https://www.animatedknots.com/klemheist-knot

Interesting, but if you ever make another video, please do it horizontally (landscape) and not vertically (portrait).

Still using my pulley system with a "no tree" connection using the Jeff Myers all-in-one setup. I spent three straight weeks with this set-up camping by a lake.

The main thing I like is having a hanging line under the tarp. I hang my pack and have a clothesline I can hang stuff from to dry or air out under the tarp. The only downside I have found is when the trees are too close together. Gotta have 15 feet or more between trees.
