is there an Oz to D conversion

I didn't see any thread topic to answer this question in the DIY Stickies.

When I see fabric for sale - like OutDoorInk Forest Leaves camo - the tarp option is 1.1 oz silpoly. But when cottage vendors list optional tarp material, it is more like 20D or 30D.

Is 1.1 oz the same as 20D or 30D or something else.

Is this like the backpack issue where some vendors list the pack size in cubic inches and others specify it in liters?

I thought there was a chance for world peace when I heard serial ports were going away and computers would all have the same USB cable. No more "wrong cable issues". People finally got together for the common good and decided on one plug ... but we know now that went.

So as a side car to my question, maybe it would be handy to have a sticky that covers various equivalences. Some "rules of thumb" could be included - like common formulas length of Amsteel for loops, dogbones, etc.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

What you're asking is not directly convertible. Denier is the weight, in grams, of 9000 meters of yarn. The lower the denier number the finer the size of yarn, and the higher the number the larger the size of yarn.

I suppose that if you knew the Denier and the thread count you could calculate a fabric density.

Fabric coatings applies after weaving will also affect fabric weight without changing the denier.

Yes, I think that the differences in tightness of weave make an accurate formula impossible. There are currently 70D fabrics on the market that are anything from 1.7oz (e.g. Warbonnet) up to 2.4oz (e.g. Dutch 2.4 Hexon).

Actually, it's far more important to me to know the Denier than the ounces per square inch, as it is the yarn weight that determines the lay characteristics. Hexon 1.6oz (40D) and Hexon 1.7oz (70D) almost weigh the same, but the 1.6oz is uncomfortable to me, while the 1.7oz is super comfortable.
