Any tips on making that work without the secondary support? I've failed miserably every time I've tried to set up without anchoring the center of the poles to my tarp ridgeline timeouts.

Meaning they fall inward, in the direction they're already leaning? If so, then you might have no choice but to anchor them. It probably depends on the length of the poles and the design of how the ends of the poles are retained - pockets, grommets, etc.

On my Winterdream, which has grommets rather than pockets, the poles each have a length of shock cord with a mitten hook at the end, so if I don't attach them then I'd have excess cord dangling which would bug the heck out of me.

Tarps with pockets for the poles right at the corner tie out spots are more likely to work without the unsecured poles falling inward.

I was able to get the center tie outs added Thank you for the suggestion! Going to hold off on the center pole mod - budget But there is a lot of strong endorsements in the rest of the thread for it so may be something I try in the future

Has anyone tried these type of external poles that use the panel pullouts? How do they compare to the internal poles?

Ahhh, I have a Winterdream as well with grommets. I'll keep anchoring away. Looks like I should try pockets instead of grommets when I get an 11' tarp. I'd love to dispense with the need to tie off the internal poles, though doing so really isn't a chore or anything - anchor free would just be so darn elegant. Thanks cmc4free!

I have them but can't compare because I haven't ever used internals.

But I love the externals a lot. I also like the fact that you don't need the poles. You can use branches or just tie off to a tree or whatever.

I have both and greatly prefer the internal center pole. Better wind resistance, only one pole to deal with and overall easier to use.

I did a DIY version of end pole mods on my Superfly and an overnight in my yard worked out nice. This weekend will be my first field test on a weekend camping trip with our Boy Scout Troop.
