    sun proof a tarp

Using my silnylon tarp as shade protection from the sun doesnt seem to keep out UV rays. Any ideas how to block them? Perhaps a reflex et type of material included?

How much UV got through? It has to block a substantial amount but how much are you looking to block?

How do you know UV (A or B?) was getting through your tarp?

I sewed together 2- 5 x 7 Grabber emergency tarps (about $15 each) to make a 7 x 10 tarp, along with linlocs at the corners and the middle. It works , but a little light still gets through. Much better than other tarps at blocking light, not real heavy, and easy to sew. I doubt it would hold up to high winds but that is not what it is for.

I'm still confused as to how you know your tarp isn't blocking the UV-something...?

Dharma Trading had some wash on or spray on stuff for fabric. Maybe contact Dharma, I purchased some a few years ago to protect clothing. I talked to Dharma Trading and they were looking for a reliable source for blocking the destruction rays, that conversation was at least two years ago.

You need to find tarp material with a high UPF rating. My cursory search turned up lots of good info for clothing (here and here for example) but not for tarps.

If you contact RBTR or Dutch, they may be able to provide a UPF rating for their tarp fabrics.

I've suffered in campsites that didn't have any vegetation to provide shade (unfortunately quite common over here) and am familiar with the problem. Cotton tarps provide better protection, as do a couple of other tarps made specifically for this purpose. But all weigh a lot more than a silnylon tarp. If you don't need the full size, try doubling up your tarp. I often flip one side over the other. However, it's still no comparison to the shade a proper tree provides. You could also try hanging a larger windshield sun shade underneath the tarp. When you don't need it for sun protection, it can do double duty as a sit pad or boost your insulation.
