Backyard Test of the Amok Draumr XL

I purchased the Amok Draumr XL Last year when they offered the “early buy-in”. The discount was irresistible so I pulled the trigger. I got the hammock around April 1st as promised and I finally got it out in the backyard for a test.

Overall, I really like this hammock! I tried the smaller model a couple of years ago and it wasn’t a good fit for me. This larger model works well for me so I’ll be keeping it!

Pros: nice flat sleeping position that’s conducive to side sleeping. The “cockpit” is wide open so you don’t get the “cocoon” feel. Plenty of pockets inside for storage. The tarp is actually waterproof so you don’t get wet when getting in and out. Quality craftsmanship and the full kit comes with everything you need. They even include stakes for the tarp in a nifty little compartment inside the tarp bag!

Cons: The system is heavy so it’s better suited to car camping as opposed to backpacking. Getting in and out of this hammock is a production too, so your noise and grunts may sound like a bear is perusing the food bag.

It is worth it to carry for a backpack trip as it is so nice to sit-up out in the woods and watch nature do it's thing. See using it at 27 minutes into video below.
No heavier than a Clark hammock.
Getting out takes some practice. I like to put my leg straps to chair mode to get out. Much easier.

Shug, that’s good scoop, man. I first learned about the Draumr from your videos. Good to know that it’s not overly heavy in the pack. Thanks much!

Grillmastertoo, it’s 12.5 feet from tree to tree in my backyard setup. Thanks!

Shugmeister, one more thought... I REALLY like the guylines on the tarp and the nifty way they provide a shock cord retention system for packing it up. No need to tie the guyline into a hank because you just pull that little piece of shock cord over it and DONE!

This is quality craftsmanship. Thanks again for your reviews!

What would be the minimum and maximum feet between hang points would y'all say for XL?

I really really really prefer the Draumr hung in as narrow a gap as possible. I try to only have a couple inches on each side of the tarp

It just super cozy that way, and the trees then give a bit more natural wind break, or rain break if the weather decides to blow sideways
