    Prolonged rain in hammock

I’m contemplating a long hike (for me) and plan to use my Dutchware Chameleon and UGC silpoly Hanger tarp. I’ve been reading lots of thru hiker posts and watching a lot of thru hiker videos to get an idea of what to expect from many days of hike/camp/sleep/repeat. One thing I’ve seen is people choosing to spend a day or more hunkered down in their tents when they experience really bad weather (prolonged cold heavy rain, thunderstorms, snow, etc.). I’m wondering what hammockers do in those situations. As much as I love my hammock, I’m not sure being confined in one for 24 hours or more would be “fun” or comfortable.

Has anyone been forced or chosen to stay in their hammock for a prolonged period? Did you just vary your position in the hammock or did you “go to ground” for some part of the time so you could move more and not feel locked in a burrito? Any tips to make that more tolerable would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I sleep and in the past taken a lot of safety breaks. I’ve been stuck in my hammock for 20+ hours a number of times over the years.

The hammock is still more comfortable than a tent, even for prolonged periods. But you don't have to lay in the hammock. Fold the hammock, such that the side seams are together, and sit with the fold under your legs and the two edge seams at your back.
Alternatively, bring a folding stool/chair. I do that and use it as a side table at night. Use a bit of string wrapped around the hammock and tied to a tarp corner to get the hammock out of the way when lounging or cooking in your chair.

I camp in rain or shine. I specifically bought a winter palace and pitch it in porch
mode for long periods of rain. I usually have a helinox chair with me so I
just sit under tarp. Very comfortable watching rain from my porch. I can
use hammock as a chair or just roll it up to create space under tarp. When
setting the tarp up, I pay attention to wind direction so I wont get a blowing
    rain coming inside.

I won’t be carrying a chair but I do use the hammock as a chair. Do you carry any type of ground cloth so you can sit/lay on the ground for variety?

    Thanks

I see you are in the Whites. Is hammock camping allowed throughout or is it restricted to certain areas? I’ve only done one hike in the Whites (Pemi loop) and I was ground camping then but that terrain seemed perfect for hammocks given how rocky and how little flat ground there was in some portions of the loop.

    Thanks

I use tyvek for ground cover in spring and summer. I have an evazote 1/4 for winter.
I purchased a double sheet and cut it down.

I've hunkered down for terrible weather. Porch mode, book and an a-lite chair and a twig stove. It's a beautiful way to have forced down time. You'll waste time getting things set up just right and then spend a ridiculous job admiring how comfortable you've made your site. Fire means a spot of warmth and light in an otherwise dreary situation. It also means warm water.

I agree with comments above. I'd MUCH rather be trapped in a hammock than a tent. More comfort, more options and better views.

This is definitely one area the tarp/hammock wins in my opinion. I’d go nuts sitting in the tent prison looking the same 4 walls. Give me a tarp in porch mode and let me enjoy watching it rain.
I’ll either sit in the hammock, lay in the hammock or sit in the ground. For the ground, I use my trash compactor bag to sit on top off.

Ditto. When I have a bear can, there's my seat. If it's shoulder seasons and likely to be colder, I'll bring my larger tarp with doors to keep the cold breeze out.

But I don't care much for sitting around, tent or hammock, so I'll go ahead and hike in the rain.
