    Hello from Wichita Falls

Preparing to hike the Grand Canyon, south rim to north rim, end of May.
First training hike was Dinosaur Valley State park near Glen Rose. Approximately 8 miles but only a couple of hundred feet change in elevation. Carried the full load planned for the Canyon hike. Pack was not really comfortable with that much weight so upgraded to Deuter 65 +10 for the second training hike.
Second training hike was to Guadalupe Peak. Four miles but almost 3000' change in elevation. New pack was very comfortable with the full load but I found I needed to cut some weight before the third training hike.
Third training hike is coming up in early May. Guadalupe National Park, Bush Mountain/Blue Ridge Loop, 16 miles almost 3000' change in elevation over two nights.

Hanging a hammock from trees is not allowed below the rim of the canyon so I have been working on hanging the hammock from homemade trekking poles. Problem getting stakes light enough to pack but stout enough to hold the weight. Getting the physics right seems to be the key. What angle should the stakes be set apart and what angle should the guy lines and stakes be set? Suggestions?

No suggestions on the trekking poles. But if you camp at the Indian Garden Campground you can hang your hammock from the ramadas. At least you still could a couple of years ago.

Below is a link to Scout Pioneering website. The scouts use many different types of anchors. Maybe you can find one adaptable to your purpose.
