    Aloha from Hawai'i

New to hammock camping, but my wife and I want to try it out for some of the warm weather backpacking trips we have coming up here. We used to live in North Carolina, where we did a fair amount of tent camping, but most of our gear is overkill temperature wise for use here.

We're going to be taking a 2-3 night trip on the Big Island in September. Temps shouldn't be colder than 60 degrees at night. Does that sound warm enough to get away with a sleeping bag liner and a pad? Or would an underquilt still be recommended?

    Thanks!

You will be fine with that yes, but I would still try to ditch the pad. The ideal solution would actually be a DIY single layer Costco down blanket jimmied up as an underquilt, or similar.

Welcome to the forums, G0r1ll@ from a guy down here near where you used to live.

As leiavoia says, with temps in the 60s, pad and sleeping bag will be fine for that temperature. It may be somewhat fiddly getting situated in the hammock with the pad sliding around and trying to zip the bag, but that's the way I started in hammocks about five years ago. Try it and if it's promising, then you can get into an underquilt, which should be the next purchase. Underquilts, for me and for most everyone, win the comfort contest over pads, but a pad will work to keep you warm. Don't be in a rush to buy more stuff. Take your time and read, read, read about quilts before you plunk down more bucks.

    Have fun and cheers.

While it's true that the vast majority of experienced hammockers switch over to underquilts, don't assume it is something you have to do. For example, Tim Watson, a popular Youtuber hammock camper prefers a pad over an underquilt. You've just got to put in the nights out and find what works for you. Good luck with your trip!

You are good to go with what you plan to use as long as the weather is good. I just used a couple hotel towels in my hammock as bottom insulation on Oahu and Guam for overnighters. Your pad will be good at blocking the wind. I don't know the Big Isl, but finding a safe parking place may be your biggest challenge.
