I once hung across a small creek (mainly just so I could say I did it). The noise of the water sent me straight to sleep. Plus in the morning I could reach down and get fresh water for my morning coffee.
Luxury!
Experienced suspension failure in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago. Was only 8 inches above the ground so no harm done. Happened really fast.
Just started using kevlar straps/amsteel with the J-Bend & got lazy by not double checking the knots. Should have had a safety knot as insurance policy but did not. Lesson learned Glad no one saw this.
I haven't been hanging long enough to fall yet. Hopefully that doesn't change.
I haven't fallen or flipped yet. But I did once get my foot tangled in my top quilt (actually a fleece throw blanket) getting out of my hammock in the middle of the night, and tripped pretty spectacularly. I barely got my feet under me in time to avoid face-planted into my dresser on the other side of the room.
I don't remember how long ago it happened. I know I had socks on which I only wear to sleep inside in winter. So I'll guess that I'd been hanging about 6 months.
Hmmm, a couple of months ago the stitching on my newer type suspension strap on a Chrysalis bridge hammock gave out at 2:30AM and I landed on the family room floor. Surprise! I just layed there for a few minutes figuring out what happened and what hurts. Drop of at least 2 1/2 feet onto laminate covered concrete. Had a headache for a couple of days. Eureka refunded my money and promised a free hammock when the new version is released in May. We'll see if that actually happens.
Couple of years ago I'm out of town and hanging in a friends basement onto the unfinished stud walls and one gives way ... same thing onto the floor. From that I learned to test as fully as possible.
I've had cinch buckles give and slip a foot or more but they usually catch ... the heat generated does a nice melting job on the strap.
I haven't taken a fall but do take I do take the precaution of a futon mattress under my indoor hang. Always concerned about a wall stud giving way.
Hanging in the woods, paddlin and catching trout- My kind of living...
Well, the truth is I am very careful. I was an active person, plus I was always the smallest in my group and the only female, so I played harder. Result is a lot of orthpedic injuries, almost everything has been fractured or dislocated. All that translates to I am very careful what I do.
I have been Hanging since 2004 no falls. I very carefully put a hand on my hammock and my fingers on top of the underquilt.
Plus if my daughter is with me I have her
give my hammock a bounce as my fail safe.
Just as an aside, when hanging over water there is often a chance of something unusual happening. We live inland however ocean tides affect river water levels. Plus dams tend to open flood gates at night. All of which changes the water level significantly and current. We found trees are often not particularly stable when they are close to the water. My daughter had one she had tied to come down...
I mis-threaded one of my cinch buckles my second time out. It held well enough when I gave it a firm tug, but let loose as soon as my full weight was applied. Like most, I suffered a bruised pride, but little else.
