    Adirondack hang. Stillwater Reservoir

I think I found a perfect location for a NY/N.E. summer hang. The Stillwater Reservoir is a very large area with wilderness forest on 3 sides. Pepper box, Five Ponds, and Pigeon Lake. It has Independence River Wild Forest on the south side.

This is Central Adirondack Park. A large group can dissipate for night camping and hike in to congragate at or near the beach. Lots of fishing/canoeing/kayaking. There are a lot of small islands and a few have campsites ON them. There are 46 campsites here first come first serve.

This is a very remote location so it is imperative you bring all the food you'll need for the length of time you'll be there.

Let's start with a Poll of times available. There could be a multitude of dates generated with several people at each gathering. I prefer August Or September. Not recommended between June and August due to black flies and skeeters? Can anyone elaborate on this?

My Wife and I first visited the place the day we bought our first brand new car. A 2003 Chevy Cavalier. We drove over 50 miles of dirt roads and it was very scenic. We came upon the Stillwater Reservoir totally by accident and it was awesome. Just out cruising in our Brand new CAR, you know ON DIRT ROADS. We headed that way from I-81 in central Square and almost ran out of fuel before we found a station. No map, no rules, and no direction chosen.

I'll get together a list of food and fuel stops in the nearest area. Fishing license can be had by DEC website and I believe there are weekend permits for out of state visitors.

Interested in this, watching when you go. I'm working and travelling during August but going back to school as a techer in September. Septemer is easier for me, can always marathon it from NYC area on Long island.
thanks for organizing it by the way.

You mean I can't rely on my superior foraging and fishing skills!?!
This looks like a great place! I'll be in for a hang and paddle for sure.

Always wanted to canoe in here. You mean that you can drive to other parts of reservoir other than the canoe put in? Unfortunately they do allow motorboats as well.

I camped there as a teenager with a youth group for a week at a time, maybe three or four times.

It is 95% only accessible by canoe or other boat isn't it?

Also, it used to be first come, first serve, no reservations for sites.

Please vote. Nothing setting in stone, just to give an idea of the best over all options to choose a date from.

Here is a list of nearby gas stations. The Stillwater Shop didn't exist when I was there last. but it's been 18 years!!!

    I didn't mention driving.

Yes it's true. I wrote.."A large group can dissipate for night camping and hike in to congragate at or near the beach", meaning "Hike" not drive.

I did state that it is first come first serve. But as Hammockers there are two state forests with some trees...
