I do believe August would be a tough one to get a choice site on a Friday or Saturday, Sunday- Thursday would be more realistic during that month.

I'm have to go with September. Probably only that Saturday night but August is booked. Thanks. I'll bring some bagels!

I've camped there many times over the years and there are a few things I've found.
    1) I've always seen tracks, or seen a bear on every trip. I had the ranger tell me once that the north shore side has one of the largest black bear populations and sightings. My nephew had a raccoon use his hoop bivy as a trampoline one night. We found bear prints on the beach one morning right outside our tents on another trip. We watched a bear swim out to an island on another.
    2) Being a kayaker and canoeist I've always paddled in to my site; it's a big destination for paddlers. I'm not sure about hiking in. Also there are island sites.
    3) I've seen the weather change in an instant from calm glass-like conditions to wind swept waves making paddling impossible with huge whitecaps.
    4) The road in is long & gravel and can be riddled with pot holes and stutter bumps. I say this just to give people a heads up.
    5) There is a water taxi that shuttles people around. If you paddle in be aware- I've had that guy almost capsize my godson about 15 years ago as we both were leaving the ramp and were about 100 yards out. He saw us and didn't slow down or alter his course. I asked the ranger and he said I wasn't the first person to complain.
    6) Last but not least- IT IS a beautiful area and you can have some beautiful beach sunsets and full moon views over the water. If you paddle into Big Burnt Lake (an inlet on the north side) there are lots of sites in there and there is a small island to camp on at the end.

Thank you very much for the input. valuable. I read on the DEC site I linked to that it is an East/West lake and can get hazardous quick. I hope everyone takes the time to read that page and others that are attributed to the area. The East end can be very littered with debris.

Oneida Lake is the same way. Very quickly calm to 3 foot waves. Need to watch the weather close. September could be iffy as that looks like the prefered month so far.

I'm up to an August pretrip if a few others want to join in.

I'd be up for an August pretrip. I just need to make sure it doesn't overlap with my French River trip that doesn't have a set date yet. So far possible 1st 2nd and 4th weekends might be available.
Being an August trip and busy camping season I think it would be advisable to go in on at least a Thursday to get a site.

I'll let you choose. I'm open to any week. I am thinking of driving up there Friday to do a quick shake down, recon of the area. I'll post up some video and pictures.

I'd be interested in a pre trip as well, depending on how my days off fall.

Chapinb, Great you're close. I didn't get out there. We got heavily side tracked by yard work. Finished up our new patio from last year, cleaned all the debris from plowing snow, and got the lawnmower ready.

I think I'm going to take a vacation day this weekend and spend some time up there.

I'm interested in this. Later in August, September or October would be great.
