Mt. Washington, backpacking destination on the way

I'm putting the ~11mi Mt. Washington loop day hike on my list for next year. Current weather is 24°, 61mph wind with 72mpg gusts. 124mph yesterday. So yeah, more of a late-summer ETA for me

It's a long 14hr drive, but it's something on my "have to do soon" list. Obviously I won't be driving that just for a day hike, so I'll be making a stop on the way for a few days of backpacking. I'll be going thru Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany so somewhere in NY for sure after a pound out some miles on the way back.

The Green Mountain NF (VT) is the only thing immediately in my path, but I'd like to get farther along before stopping. That does look pretty nice though!

Yea, that Mt Washington is no joke and there's always a death or two on this killer mountain each year.

I've been wanting to do a Presidential Traverse for a while now. Just so many other mountains with less people up there for my once a year visit. I've got 11 of the 48 4000'ers done so far.

Look into the Pemigewasset Loop if you haven't done it. Multiple 4000'ers and some of the most scenic.

I've got a picture somewhere of me leaning into the wind up there, the wind prevented me from falling forward. Also, one minute we would have great visibility, the next we would be in a cloud, back and forth. It was impressive. Definitely a place where dealing with wind chill and wind driven rain/snow would have to be a major consideration.

A Glastonbury Loop might be a good idea after a dayhike of Washington. Pretty mellow grades and great hanging. You may have to deal with thrubies, depending on when you go, though. A bushwhack into the middle of the Wilderness is both fun and creepy if you do your research on the area.

Various loops can be made in the Stratton Pond/Bourn Pond area, as well.

Hi One Click, here is a creepy factoid I read about the Green Mountain Forest NP...

    Glastenbury Mountain
    Green Mountain National Forest, VT
Follow the 272-mile Long Trail along the spine of the Green Mountains this month and you’re guaranteed top-notch vistas of slopes painted red and orange. But leave a detailed itinerary at home before you go: In the last century, half a dozen hikers have simply vanished from the area now known as the Bennington Triangle. In fact there's a Vermont town call Killington! Coincidence? Hmmmm.
