    Pinhoti/skyway/chinabee loop

I just got back from 3 nights in the cheaha wilderness! I did the 17 mile pinhoti /skyway/chinabee loop. - this is my 4 th time, and it’s one of my favorites! High cliffs, grand 20 mile vistas, low valleys, lots of waterfalls and stream crossings- it’s a beautiful trail! (And if u go during the week, there is lots of solitude-I only saw 2 hikers the entire time. Sunday I drove to cheaha after work ,hiked a mile and camped at cheaha falls. ( cold and windy night, but I stayed warm and dry!). Monday I hiked about half way up the skyway trail and camped near the old ccc cabin ruins. Tuesday I completed the skyway trail, and hiked the pinhoti up the infamous stairway to heaven ( a very tough climb!) and camped for the night at the pinhoti/ Odom/ chinabee junction. I got into camp early, so I spent several hours reading and taking a nap- it felt great! After a very relaxing night and a great supper ( homemade dehydrated lasagna, and apple pie for dessert)- I hiked out the next day. I had great weather the whole time, and had lots of extra time to explore, read, rest and just generally enjoy being alone in the woods with no distractions ( it was wonderful!). It was the perfect balance of miles and relaxation time. That loop can be easily done in 2 days- but where is the fun in that! ( I deal with enough deadlines and pressure at work!)

FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Looks like an excellent trip. Is the Trail Description on this page the trails/direction you chose?

Beautiful area!! My family and I camped a couple of nights at Cheaha last week. It was extremely windy one of the 2 nights we were there as well!

This map is all you need. The figure eight on the other side (Cave Creek, McDill Point) is also outstanding. Actually heading there next weekend!

Note - the mileage on the trail signs from the Chinnabee Shelter to Adams gap is way off, longer than stated by a couple miles (maybe trail was rerouted over time).

Thanks for the map. Which trail head did you park at and did it seem safe?

i parked at turnipseed . I've parked at Adams gap before with no problems. both trailheads are next to a well traveled road.

Nice. I'm thinking of doing this in a couple of months. So water along the trail isn't an issue?

No one sits around talking about that trip where it was 76 and sunny the whole time.
