Hammock Gear have a whole section devoted to alien but there's no description or illustration of how they work or how to use them. There seem to be a hundred fifty thousand ways to hang a hammock from a tree.

Look up Paul Tomlin's channel on YouTube. Those videos are what helped me.

    lol probably more than that.

It's easy to make things ever more complicated with gizmos, but there are limits to simplicity... webbing straight to CL with J-bend or Becket is about as simple as it gets.

I think that's Level 2 simple. Level 1 is cinch buckle and strap, IMHO.

    Simplicity vs. Minimalism

Buckles arguably could be simpler to use and adjust, but it would be difficult to find a more minimalist approach that cmoulder suggests.

I have been using S/S KOLAs for hammock suspension since 2014. The only failure I've had was user induced and no equipment was damaged (and won me a first prize in the Hammock Fail Awards... video evidence is still available).

I use them on all my hammocks, and with both Amsteel and dyneema webbing. I'd be more concerned with a whoopie hook cutting my Amsteel!

From his most recent videos, he is apparently still using them, so I commented asking for his experience, and I will post his reply, if and when I get one. I am using 10' lengths of 7/64 Amsteel on each side, and, if I had to replace them once a year, that wouldn't be much of a problem, so long as there are no failures in between. Still, I wouldn't like the line to begin looking all gnarly after a while.

    Notch where?

    KOLA?

No stress damage to the webbing with this?

Not sure if I can find the video of it how to notch them, but I do think I still have modified LA in my gear closet.. it makes the standard LA's work like a UFA.

KOLA - Knock of Loop Alien. I think I started this acronym a while back, when some of us were going bonkers over the LA's.. I got reamed for it.

I didn't use the KOLA's with the strap long term and it was with the larger stainless KOLA's. Here is a link. the picture is huge.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I picked up two to try them out on my tarp. I haven't gotten to it yet. I can see where notching can make them easier to use if they won't be loaded as heavily as in hammock suspension.

I have always been concerned with this issue and wearing on the amsteel. So I attach a Dutch Biner to the CL's and use another CL to attach to my Beetle Buckles. It's very easy to move that last CL around to spread the wear.Of course the biner is biting the hammock CL in the same spot most of the time but you can move it from time to time without too much hassle. And CL's can be replaced without excessive expense if you find it necessary. That biner also makes a nice water break.....anyway,it works for me without too much of a weight penalty.
