VIDEO: 55 Miles on the Ozark Highlands Trail

We enjoyed four nights on the Ozark Highlands Trail. The mid-march Arkansas weather was a nice escape from Minnesota snow and cold. My buddy Krusty joined me as we were shuttled from Turner Bend Store to the Ozone Trailhead. Then, over the next 3.5 days we walked from Ozone to Fane Creek (55 miles). The next morning we road walked back to Turner Bend, took much needed showers and drove 11 hours home.

I would say this trail was moderately difficult. No really huge hills. Not a lot of mud. No bridges required wet crossings. A wet week before we got their provided plentiful water access. Some difficulty was caused by a lot of rocks on the trail and there were still a lot of leaves on the ground. After roling my ankles a few times (not seriously), I paid better attention to the hidden rocks.

Many great camping spots and very nice people along the trail. I hope you enjoy this video.

Glad you guys had a good time. I also prefer to hike that section east to west. Too bad you didn’t venture a little further to White Rock Mountain, it’s one of the highlights of the OHT.

So I have section hiked Fort Smith to Ozone now. I may finish the trail to Woolum next spring. Are there any good shuttle options other than Turner Bend from Woolum to Ozone? Thanks for watching.

I’ve used Ron from Sassafras Shuttle from Fairview to Woolum. Not 100% sure he’s still shuttling, but he’s worth a try: 479-446-2910.

Buffalo River Outfitter runs shuttles on the eastern side of the trail. I haven’t used them, but have talked to others who have: 870-439-2200.
