Looking for recommendation for UQ

Hello,

I am once again looking for a recommendation for an UQ for my husband and son for hammock camping with Boy Scouts. And of course, I am on a deadline for my son's birthday. I am willing to wait for quality and just give him a photo of an under quilt if we need to wait for something to be made.

So, here is what we think we want, but we are open to suggestions.

I am looking at UnderGround Quilts.

- full length, so it can be used in all weather, hubby doesn't like his feet cold, hubby is 6 foot tall and son is 5'9"
- warm enough for cool weather camping
- something that will work with their current set up - DIY hammocks, Thunderfly Tarp by WarBonnett, Dutchware Gear Summer Sock bug net
- something that will work for packing in their backpacks for high adventure trips with some hiking and carrying their packs
- something available in natural colors so as to not stand out
- something roomy and not confining like a mummy bag

Is there a chart that compares all of the different under quilts? It seems like if you are not familiar with them by their design name it is hard to figure out which ones to look at.

Willing to look at any brand, not afraid to pay for quality. What other info do you need from me? THANKS for the help!!!

UGQ makes some really nice gear. I'd recommend calling over there and speaking with Paul or Missy, and let them give you a rundown of all the options. They can help you figure out the best solution for your needs, and stay within a given budget.

Hammock Gear also makes very nice down quilts. They have premium and economy models. Both use the same construction, but the Econ series uses slightly lower fill-power down (800fp), and slightly heavier fabric.

Warbonnet is known for their Wooki quilts- which are designed like a secondary hammock with no side channels. This keeps the quilt from pressing inward on the sides- restricting the diagonal lay. Although the Wooki is designed for Warbonnet's own hammocks, they can work with pretty much any gathered end hammock with minimal modifications.

I'd also take a look at Cedar Ridge Outdoors. They are newer to the quilt market, but seem to be putting out very nice products.

If you're interested in synthetic underquilts, Arrowhead Equipment has been in that game for many years, have a good reputation, and offers a fast turnaround time.

Another synthetic option is Simply Light Designs Trail Winder UQ. It is designed to hang like a secondary hammock- similar to the Wooki. SLD's turnaround times are lightning fast- especially for fully custom gear. I'm talking you order custom gear, and it is made by hand and shipped in 2 days kinda fast!

My quilts are from Loco Libre Gear. Unfortunately, they had to suspend taking orders for a little while- due to personal health reasons. Their gear is excellent, however. Hopefully they will begin taking orders again soon.

Generally what I've picked up from various threads here in the forums is that a *most season* quilt should be 20*....if you only have one. From most of the vendors listed that should get them to 30-35*. With a sock or an under quilt protector that might add another 10* of warmth....probably most of what they will face in scouts or at the high adventure bases (except Northern Tier in winter).

Personally I have loved my Hammock Gear Econ Incubator quilts. Their premium quilts cost a little more and you save a few ounces but for the cost...not sure it's worth it. I also like them because of the differential cut that saves a little pack space/weight down at the foot end of the quilt. It does not sacrifice comfort/warmth. Just a little slimmer.

Food for thought - an underquilt will protect their backsides....you'll need a TOP quilt for their tops. That's a whole nother discussion....but that's what next year's birthday is for, right?

All of the information above from rweb82 is helpful and you may want to contact the venders mentioned as to thier delivery time lines. Any of them will supply a quality quilt / and customer service is foremost. Personally- I have UGQ quilts and just ordered a set of 20* quilts/ Bandit TQ and Zepplin UQ.
I find them to be extremely easy to set up and adjust and thier temp ratings to be conservative.

I've got six HG premium quilts (0*, 20* & 40*), but the lists above are good choices. I don't know much about Cedar Ridge or Simply Light - doesn't seem they've been in the game long.

Sleeping bags will work in a hammock as a tip quilt.
Yes, make sure to check how long it takes to get a UQ. Varies from vendor to vendor.

An UQ is differential cut when the upper material (that which is touching the hammock bottom) is cut smaller than the exterior material of the UQ. In this way when the UQ is snuged up to the hammock your precious down does not get compressed/ becoming less effective. Yes they can use a sleeping bag and if it is rotated 90* and the zipper only zipped @ 16"-24" up the long side (now on the bottom) you have alarge TQ. Most all UQ attach at the end of the hammock to the continous loop (CL) then there is usually tension adj. for the main UQ suspension and end adj. to seal up or vent the ends of the UQ.
