I have a set of Venom (UHMWPE) straps from RSBTR.

    Pros:
    - They are shockingly light compared to the "standard" 1500# poly straps
    - Much less bulky than "standard" straps
    - Hold both Becket's and J-bend's just fine for me.

    Cons:
    - Roll like crazy, takes a while to straighten them back out and roll up (if that's your thing, as it is mine)
    - Will damage tree bark, I always chock with twigs when I use them which is very effective.

Long story short, I never use them for car camping or short hikes, but always use them for any moderate distance backpacking and take the time to chock the straps around the trees.

Good review... my short&sweet breakdown is that they're much more like cord than webbing.

I dig my 2" wide kevlar straps.

    I have some Dutch's 1.5 Dyneema straps.
They're very light and very thin.

The straps gets curled up in at least two places (at the tree end, and at the hammock end) every time you use them. It takes a minute to flatten them out each time. You also need to take care when placing them around the tree that you're not twisting the strap or allowing it curl, which happens very easily.

They hold a becket hitch as long as the strap is flattened out when tying it. If you tie the becket when the strap is curled up it can slip. The process of tying the becket tends to curl the strap, so you need to take some extra care when tying to avoid that.

These are fairly minimal hassles, but they're definitely hassles. I'm in two minds about whether they're worth it. Cos they're so thin and light!

Hey Brooklyn, any issues with rolling using these straps?

I am using the becket with the Warbonnet Dyneema straps and they roll just like the venom straps. I also had issues with kevlar rolling. Thanks.

I'm not Brooklyn, but I have both and my observation is that the Myerstech straps roll (or bunch) up similar to—but not quite as bad as—Venom straps, and they flatten back out somewhat easier. They are a teensy bit heavier and higher volume than Venom.

    Ok, thanks

I wonder what Myers’ heavier Dyneema straps are like, I believe the 3.0?

There’s a bit of roll. They’re very low volume, not much to them, malleable.

I am happy with the UHMWPE from dutch. I have only used them a few times but I really like the small footprint in my pack and of course the weight savings is great too. My buddy has the 1" kevlar so I am a little familiar with them. I haven't had any rolling up issues with the straps yet but I can see it happening as I use them more.

Honestly, it is more about bulk than weight for me. Any time I can get less bulky I am happy! I love my spider/polypro straps for buckles (winter) but yeah, UL webbing for the win.
