I see every once in a while tarps described as flat tarps but see them often pitched just like a regular tarp. What makes them considered a flat tarp?
I thought maybe a lack of bonded or sewn ridgeline but it appears the ones that I see have them.

Hum. I've honestly never heard of a "flat tarp". Every tarp I own is a flat tarp

I believe a flat tarp is any tarp rectangular or square in shape, and has straight (flat) edges- no catenary cuts.
Got it.
So a rectangular tarp and a flat tarp are the same thing.
A flat tarp is one laid on the ground and smoothed out so there's no folds or wrinkles.
If its shape is a basic rectangle, square, or (maybe) a parallellogram, then it'll be a 'flat' tarp.
Marketing. We offer a better product because it is a flat tarp.
