On a related note, it seems to me that a little bit longer loop would reduce the angle of spread, taking away some of the tension on that first row of stitches.

But still, I agree that almost any stitch pattern that covers a good bit of a "couple inch" overlap is probably sufficient. I've got some stupid looking early ones that still seem fine....

I used the diygearsupply pattern for the first set I ever sewed: https://diygearsupply.com/wp-content...rap-lowres.jpg

Essentially, the box with an 'x' style. Then I started reading about how this that and the other was stronger/better and I started using patterns with bar tacks both horizontally and vertically. I've made them from 1500# poly, UHMWPE, and cargo straps, all using Mara 70 thread. I rotate through them all based on how I'm camping, and distribute them to my daughters when we hang together. To date, not one has failed or has shown any sign of failure.

My take away is that as long as your stitching is proper, any of the patterns are effective and you should choose the one that pleases you whether that's based on aesthetics or lab data. The result will not likely vary.
