That's when I made sure I to put my home printouts in the pack!
I forgot, "cellular" iPads have built-in GPS but those that are "WiFi only" don't - hence my external Bad Elf.
We didn't have to hike all the way back. Because of my printouts, we saw we could stay at our current elevation and follow the contour to our intended pass. It was getting late and slow moving with the bushwhacking. We camped half way there and completed the journey the next day.
Two useful GPS features are elevation and Time of Sunset.
There are those other subtle "North" indicators - though more limited in dense-ish woods and cloudy day - but first one has to realize the compass is wrong.
Map and compass stuff is fun. On on geocaching trek, after we found the cache, I took a bearing to the car, had my friend dial it in on her compass, turned off the GPS, and said, "Get us home." Using her compass, she hike almost a mile on the bearing and we ended up by the front passenger door (and the couldn't it as we approached from a distance because the car was behind a big rock).
