Uq made from an old sleeping bag

I currently have an old 0° synthetic mummy bag that I was thinking of turning into an UQ as I don't have a lot of cash to buy one. Only problem is I have 0 talent for sewing and don't have a machine either.

I was thinking to cut a hole in the foot and head cover of the bag to slip it around the hammock and attach shock cord to keep it in place. I've seen a diy instruction on it but they sewed the ends shut

How effective would it be to close up the holes with Tenacious tape or somethung else instead of sewing it shut?

I would do this with the sleeping bag.

This type of underquilt works well. I did the Costco Down Throw thing. If you have the quilt already, this is a good no sew solution.

That's similar to what I had in mind. The only issue I was seeing is with the footbox of the mummy bag. It won't be able to spread out like a normal UQ so was thinking of it going around the foot end of the hammock so it would end up like the bag in the picture, just not as nice since it wouldn't be sewn. The link I was looking at is https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY...tSleeping-Bag/

@Amaas: A lot of people find the "hammock through hole in footbox" method to be 1) annoying on the feet, 2) forces an uncomfortable banana-lay, and 3)difficult to hang and adjust because you have to unhang the hammock itself to get it on.

This method is sometimes used for deep-winter "pod" systems, but not for most 3-season quilts.

I would recommend you bite the bullet, learn some very basic sewing machine skills, and slice the bag open into a rectangle and go from there.

Alternatively, use the mummy bag as-is for perfectly good top insulation and improvise some other bottom insulation.

Hmm, ok. So I will just scrap that idea and go with your Gemini tutorial. By the time I get a sewing machine and teach myself to use it I would likely have just as much in it with less versatility.

Thank you for your input and keeping me from wasting the bag and my time.

Just about any sewing machine will work just fine for lightweight hammock gear. Hop on Craigslist and pick up a Singer Talent or similar for $40 and have at it.
