wish I would have been smart enough to ask this question a month ago, before ordering full length for my wife and I. Really never gave it much thought as she is on the short side and I'm pushing 6'. After reading and thinking about this a different way I should have gone with 3/4 UQ. Guess our trips this year will tell and we'll test for our needs.

This is my go to for research before I may any major hammock purchases. But the hammock world is very customizable for each individual. That's why so many people like it (and the unbelievable sleeping comfort). I use my 3/4 Grelock 3 as my summer / fall UQ down to 30*. I can use the backpad out of my Gossamer Gear pack for the foot insulation with a pair of Smartwool mountaineer socks. Below 30*, and I switch to the full length UQ.

I'm adding a 3/4 back in this summer...

My 20F is a full length Incubator. My 40F is a Phincubator, which at 5'11" give me full coverage with nothing to spare.. but I sleep with my legs pulled up so longer is a waste.

I am thinking a Premium Phoenix is in order for summer but HG doesn't make a 50F, and a 40F would be redundant. I want just enough length to take the edge off. I'm going that route primarily to reduce weight and volume.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I used a partial length underquilt because my legs and feet don't get as cold as my upper body, besides i usually prop my feet and legs on my pack when sleeping in my hammock to prevent cramps.

For me, it's the same reason I never used a full length pad for ground sleeping - I just don't seem to need it, so no need to carry it.

I sleep cold and can only use a partial for summer and then, I still find myself fussing with quilt trying to keep myself perfectly centered on the quilt. For me, under 60 needs to be full length. I don’t care about the weight if I can’t sleep.

Easier to set in my opinion and get right on the hammock in my opinion.
Takes up less room in the pack.
I use a Thermarest sit pad under my feet lightly inflated to insulate my feet. Also use it around camp to sit on and fan fire. Also put my down jacket over the end of my hammock for feet warmth since the down jacket would just be in my pack.
To me the partial UQ makes sense to about 20ºF. Then many like a full.

Opinions will differ on this but this is my take on it.

I totally agree with the ease of use and versatility of the partial underquilt (I've got the Yeti, this little prodigy), but one thing I can't understand is how you can sit on "dirty" trunks on your sit pad and then put this sit pad dirty in your top quilt. Do you have a way of cleaning it or something or you just... don't care ?

I’m out there for the dirt, I’d eat it if it tasted better. Besides everyone needs a souvenir or it didn’t happen.

I'll add my vote for clews are best! Less fiddling once it's set up. The spandex idea probably works fine, but will be heavier than shock cord.

The simpler the better, a continuous length of 1/8” shock cord with prusik knots pulling on the corners to keep it spread out and easily adjustable..If you don’t like adjustment you can use something like a stop knot. There also great on stuff sacks to replace cord locks.

The last thing I want to do is untangle everything when I’m loading and unloading.
