This is a sticky authored by Peter Pan from the article heading of the Forums. It conveys a lot of hard earned wisdom in a short read.

    Good Luck

EDIT: This may give you some perspective of where that wisdom was earned: http://www.jacksrbetter.com/our-story/

I found that in wind it is important to be able to detach your guylines from your tarp. Nothing worse than 4 stakes and guylines whipping around attached to a blowing tarp. In short order it will look like you attached your tarp to dreads. If you can still see after lassoing your blowing stakes.
The essential part of me can not be discussed here. Ask me in person.

Thats what I have been using/ alum. 'Y' stakes- they seem to hold well unless the ground gets saturated then all bets are off- a couple of times I have had to double stake- one holding the tarp and the other one holding the first stake, a real pain but it held.

After a pop-up thunderstorm that plowed through my campsite out of the blue, I set up every hang as if there will be a hurricane.

Tie to vegetation—-tree roots, small trees, etc. As a rule, you should do this anyway. Stakes are a poor second choice.

If stakes are needed, I always keep four of the longer stakes in my stake bag, along with the regular stakes. If possible, i use them (if they can be fully planted to the depth of their heads, if not I stick with the shorter stakes). Longer stake, more holding power.

If staking, put giant rocks on the inside of each stake.

It is helpful to be able to detach your hammock from the suspension, via Dutch biners or similar. If things get really hairy, you can detach hammock and quilts and stuff them in a dry bag without messing with the suspension in the driving rain and wind.

If weather is nice and I am in porch mode, or tarp is completely folded back, I always have stakes prepared, in the ground, in position for a rapid storm deployment.

A little over cautious, maybe, but I’m a soloist.

Wind never bothered me. I was in a crazy winter storm few years ago, negative temps and 60mph gusts with like 40mph sustained. Had no tarp and was perfectly fine. Slept like a baby.

Where conditions are great to be dry, l have returned covering to canvas skins, this keeps the canvas (moon lamps 2019) whipping or breaking to attempt in any event to rest, a TC can anticipate wind blowing through, anyway makes to a greater degree a sail for lounger to hurl about, lounger tie outs can help here!
