Michigan Green Timbers 2019: 5th's time a charm Snowmageddon

I just wanted to get the thread started and I'll be adding more to it in a couple days when I get a little more organized. This years 5th Annual Green Timbers Big Tree Hang was a resounding success. Success is that we had snow on the ground and lots of it. In fact, so much that if you would step off the packed trails through camp, most likely you'd sink down to over your knees! We had 19 1/2 brave souls join us over the official 4 day event, but some of us got in 5-7 glorious days of hanging in the piney woods of the Pigeon River State Forest.

A couple highlights from the weekend: digging out lots of snow to get our gear set up, cutting and sledding wood for the campfire from the farthest possible point from camp ( ), falling down in snow and coming up looking like the pillsbury doughboy because it would stick to you, great stories around the campfire, a variety of food including tamales, venison stew, chili, bacon, sausage and peppers, dutch oven eggs with sausage and potatoes, more bacon, chicken fried rice, pierogies & kielbasa....the list goes on. The big hit of the weekend was the awesome 15 foot tall cooking tripod that Dogger built to hold everything needed to whip up a meal. He also hit another home run with his campfire oven where he created his dog treats for the crew: late night chocolate chip cookies, bisquits, and more cookies! AndrewB also knocked it out of the park with his homemade stout. And, Dan returned with his 25 cup coffee perk for the never ending camp coffee.

I just wanted to thank everyone for attending and pitching in around camp! It was great catching up with old friends and meeting some new ones. FYI, the 6th GT BTH will be February 20-23rd, 2020, at our traditional location.

Please post your photos and recollections here. Here's a few of my pictures from the weekend:

For the 5th GT Hang, we Weren’t lacking snow! Parking was limited, but we made it work. Earlier in the week, temperatures dipped into negative territory, so I lugged in my 5lb mummy bag to supplement my quilts. Turns out I could have left it at home as temps didn’t dip below 20 during the traditional Thursday through Sunday dates of the hang...at some point during Saturday night’s rainstorm, temps briefly shot up into the high 40s and I woke up drenched in sweat. All in all, another great weekend spent in the woods eating way too much food.

Missed the blizzard warning, but that was probably a good thing!

Looks like a good time as usual. I'm looking forward to an extended stay next year.

Great times. I ended up bailing later on Sunday as the storm was kicking off. The wind was blowing snow all over my hammock and I decided it was a good time to call it. Dogger closed out the week and I believe left yesterday.

He was testing his heavy duty grill with hot dogs when I left.

The trail was already starting to blow over and disappear in areas on the way out and I was covered in snow blowing from the wind.

What an adventure, and it was great seeing everyone.

Also, I have what appears to be the top of a tent, it is grey with purple trim. It was left behind, and I will post pictures of it when I unpack. I can mail it to the owner if claimed.

I think Dogger wanted to stay to finish up the bacon and burn all the split wood! This year I really enjoyed spending 5 days back there. Even though the deep snow made it tough getting around sometimes, at least we can say this year we had a true winter experience. Here's some more pics from the trip:
