I am comfortable with a 10 degree cushion. That means if I have a 20 degree Top Quilt, I'll be fine at 30 degrees. If I get down to the specified limit (20 degrees in my example), I have to carefully consider the heat grabbing elements. In your case, is it cold just because the temperature is low, or is it cold because you have a lot of wind to deal with, or is it cold because in your area you have something called "humidity" (I live at 4000 ft in a "high desert" - I had to look Humidity up in the dictionary)?

For example, if you will be camping in the wind, I think you would be better served by considering your tarp size and placement to block the wind rather than try and arm wrestle with it by getting a warmer designated top quilt or under quilt. Another benefit of that is, instead of buying your coverings for the rarer occurring max cold temperatures, they will be more suitable for a wider range up temperatures in the other seasons. For example, my 0 degree TQ and UQ get very little use. I'm happy to have them when the weather dictates, but I can usually get by very well with 20 degree rated gear and move to 40 degree gear in the spring.

In other words, unless winter camping is really your thing - plan your gear for the times you'll use it most. That will save you weight/bulk/dollars. And it doesn't mean you can't camp in the winter; it means that you'll consider additional barriers, underquilt protectors, socks, tarp design (doors) and placement, when considering the cold.

thank you everyone you have given me a lot to work with, i think i will be trying out the gear i have this weekend, it will be about 17 deg f this weekend so i will see what my threshold is. i think i will use my larger tarp to hit the ground on both sides and close one side in. i am not sure how i missed that video shug, i usually see most of them, thanks ps i will be in my backyard, haha

-30° is the perfect temp for "The Shug" and I am no "The Shug"

Never been below 0° so I would defer to the snowbirds in your area on that one.
Actually I remember a recent video by Shug where he said he thinks between -10° and 10° is best because it’s challenging, but not too dangerous.
