    Thoughts on Cheap Down Blankets

Has anyone had experience using that down Costco throw or any cheap down filled throw from Amazon? What temps have you taken them down too? Any DIY modification instructions for converting them to a quilt? Thoughs on the Black Diamond Double Packable Down Throw ($36 & 700 FP)?

There is a LOT of information on the Costco builds in the DIY section. Just search for Costco or CDT and you will find enough data to keep you reading for a week

The Double Black Diamond Packable Throw is the Costco Quilt. They were sold in bulk at Costco so became the Costco Down Throw or CDT.

I've had my UQ down to 30* feeling good and my TQ down to 40* and feeling some cold get thru. I did mod the UQ by making the faux baffles, but the TQ is just sewn thru.

Here, you can see the baffles made by the faux baffle method.

The TQ is just the basic method of removing one direction of the thread, relocating 2 rows to lengthen the quilt and moving 6 squares for the sewn footbox

    The finished product

YouTube has a lot of good vids on the different mods and of course the many threads here are wonderful to get you going.

Good luck and show us your results.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I followed Leiavoia's directions to make the excellent (IMHO) Gemini UQ, which involves no sewing (a plus for anyone as unskilled as I). Directions here: http://leiavoia.net/pages/hammock/geminiquilt.html

For my top quilt, I layered together two more CDTs. This involved minimal sewing (by hand). Here's my post on that: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...down-top-quilt

I have camped successfully with this rig in temperatures that dipped below freezing . . . BUT I wore two layers of long underwear, wool socks, a hat . . . AND I also used a second UQ (a cheap sleeping bag rigged with clews) outside of the Gemini . . . and an underquilt protector outside of all that. Also a big tarp: the Kelty Noah 12x12, with the "doors" closed.

(Did I mention this was a car-camping trip?)

I sleep cold, but I might risk this rig (i.e., CDTs + UQP) w/o the backup quilt down to 40 degrees F.

Hoping this helps . . . or amuses.
