Greetings friends, I'm relatively new to this forum and sincerely apologize if anyone has ever introduced this before but has anyone ever modified their blackbird to be able to remove the bug net if they so choose. I'm only 5' 8" so I didn't opt for the doc but sometimes I'd like to option to take the net off. Cheers folks...

You can get the traveller. It is a netless hammock and you do not need to mess with your blackbird.
Anyway the Blackbird has a straps where you can tie up the net off as you well know, I guess.

I wouldn't mess with the bug net. In order to be able to remove the bug net completely, you'd have to remove the original zipper and replace it with a separating zipper of some sort. Problem is, these only come in fixed lengths. Good luck finding one that fits the length of the Blackbird. And even if you find a suitable zipper, you'd have to copy the end design of the XLC, since the bug net will be stressed in certain positions. This is why the XLC bug net has loops and biners that clip into the suspension.
To make a long story short: modifying the original bug net would take a lot of effort, time and probably money - and the outcome might not be what you would like it to be. It would be easier to either tie the bug net back, get a Traveler for the bug-free season, or upgrade to an XLC. With 5'8" you might appreciate the extra room of the XLC. I certainly do, and I'm only 5'4".
I didn't know the additional complexity of the xlc's bug net. Perhaps I will invest in a different model this year if that's the setup I want. Thanks for the feedback.
