    Unhappy CRL/ Prusik Help

    Good morning, Yall.

So I want to preface this with the fact that I have already accepted that I am likely doing something wrong.

A while back I ordered the Dutchware CRL with TATO trap connectors. I liked the idea of one line for everything and keeping it connected to the tarp (my HG Cuben Fiber Tarp with Doors). A problem arose with the tarp connectors not really fitting well through the smaller rings on the tarp. More of an inconvenience than an actual problem. In my haste to get something that works smoothly, I removed the tarp connectors and ordered a pair of soft shackles. The first time using it I had no noticeable issues.

Now, as I am prepping for a trip to Uwharrie in a couple days, I am finding that that Prusik knots slip really easily when I am tightening my tieouts. I can reduce tension easily enough, but I am worried that anything more than a breeze will make them slip.

I chose the green reflect-it for the RL and yellow Zing-it for the shackles. Should I have chosen different lines? What am I doing wrong?

In penance I offer the following dad joke:

Why do chicken coops have two doors? Because if there were four, they would be chicken sedans.

You could add a couple more wraps on your prusik knots.
    Carry forth.

How many wraps did you do with your prusiks. Sometime adding another wrap or two takes care of the slipping.

I have found that the prusik works best if it is a smaller diameter that the ridgeline. On my CTR, I used 2mm zing-it for the ridgeline and 1.75mm for the prusik. I do four wraps and it has never slipped.

I use the CRL with prussiks produced by Dutch. CRL is yellow 1.75 zing-it and prussiks are gray 1.75 lash-it . Three wraps and never noticed any slippage.

Ok so I just went out into the surprisingly warm yard and set it back up. Five wraps seems to be what it needed and is working as I want it to.

Both the CRL and soft shackles from Dutch are 1.75mm, so maybe that explains the slight slippage.

Thanks for the help yall. It turns out that the most common sense and easy solution to a problem evades the mind. A second set of eyes/opinion often solves the problem.

I think the problem may be the reflect-it/zing-it combination of the lines I used. The zing-it/lash-it combo seems to work fine enough for everyone.

Sometimes you just have to wear off the Xanthane coating and they prusiks will grip better.

There are a couple things that could help, here.

The extra wraps are the most obvious.

You could also add small continuous loops as Prussik pulls, which makes it easier to tighten and loosen, but also has the effect of increasing the diameter of the ridgeline, and thereby also apparently increasing the bite of the Prussiks. This is what I intend to do as soon as I have some more matching 1.75mm cordage.

Wear on the coating will eventually give your Prussiks more grunt as well, as otherap have pointed out.

You weren’t really doing anything wrong.
