Thread: Hennessey Hex?

    Hennessey Hex?

So.. I'm putting together a basic hammock setup, mostly for car camping. In hand, I have a Warbonnet Traveler with suspension and a Dutchware Summer sock. I'd like to pick up an affordable tarp, and the Henessey Hex looks pretty good. I looked at the Amazon tarps and while the prices are enticing, I'd like something I can count on if I do pack a bit here in the Southern California mountains. Hennesey fans please give me some feedback. Best, tk

BTW, I'm a fair weather camper; no snow or driving rain for me, lol

I have one - good tarp for the money if you want decent coverage but not expecting 4-season coverage.

I've used a Hennessy Hex for over 10 years. Not a single drop of leakage.

I've had my Hennessy hex tarp for a bit more than four years and it's a good tarp. It's a fantastic tarp if you get it on sale, but even if you don't the price isn't bad at all. It's a bit heavier than some that are the same size, but it's robust. I like the little extra value touches. It comes with tie outs already attached and it has pockets to stuff the lines into when you put it away. Mine has given me zero trouble in the years that I've had it and has weathered some good downpours from time to time.

I've had my Hennesy Hex for a good 10-12 years and it's still going strong. As others have said, it's not the lightest but it is super durable. I made DIY doors for it and just attached the doors with little clips for winter use. I recently bought a winter tarp that I'll use now in it's place all year round as having the doors gives me peace of mind, even in downpours and heavy snow. For the price thought the HH Hex is a great piece of kit.

I also got into analysis paralysis looking for a tarp on a budget. I tried to find one I liked that was cheaper or about the same price as the HH and just as good. I couldn't find one. Since I only car camp anymore the weight is not an issue and you get a lot of tarp for the price of a HH.

I was looking for a Winter Tarp a few weeks ago and someone pointed me to the Penny Pincher tarps at UGQ. You may want to give them a look as well. Slightly more expensive and a little bit of a wait but worth the look. I have no experience with any of their tarps other than checking them out at a group hang recently. I was impressed and I'm ordering a WINTERDREAM 12 this month.

The HANGER 12 looks very nice.

Random question but does anyone know the thickness of the guylines that come with the Hennessey Hex tarp?

I started with a Hennessy Expedition (actually I started with a “bridge hammock” from the Dollar store) with it’s standard tarp and quickly upgraded it to the HH Hex. The hex served me faithfully for years. The only reason I sold it was it had been relegated to an adventure partner's (actually “my”) Ridge Runner and she wanted more coverage for privacy and warmth. But that Hex is a great utility tarp.

You can certainly find lighter tarps, but if your criteria is a good general purpose tarp that’s not too expensive, the old HH Hex will do the job.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
