Need help with DIY hammock stand

    Hello,

Haven't been on here in ages and I'm currently on the road living the vanlife! I want to make a hammock stand that I can keep on the ladder rack of my van so I can hang when I don't have trees.

I remember a few years ago at MAHAA a bunch of folks had made stands using pipes that folded up. They weren't light, but they were simple and effective. I'm looking for designs on something like that or whatever may have come along that's better! I want to DIY and keep it inexpensive... trying to make this stand before I leave for Baja next week.

Any help is appreciated, suggestions, links, videos... I truly appreciate the help as it is hard to go through all the threads on stands over the years.

    Thanks,
    DHT

In my opinion, there is no need to look any further than here:

I have tried both bipod (made) and turtle dog (purchased) stands. The tensa is by far my favorite. Less than $40 and you have an excellent DIY stand. You can make it 8-9 feet long to fit on your van’s rack. I made mine 9 and used it with a tarp quite successfully.

That looks simpler that what I had in mind, but also looks pretty effective. You said you use it with a tarp as well? Do you have any pics of it in use? Thanks for the response.

I cannot find one right now. I used a 12 foot tarp with no ridgeline. D-rings were hooked directly to line holding apex of stand together. It was a really easy and slick setup. Tied head end to tree and staked out foot end. You can find many pictures. Do a Google search for "tensahedron stand with tarp" or look here:

Here is a link of this stand in use. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...al+storm+Gordo
Also the last picture in the initial post shows it set up with a tarp.

Note the Tropical Storm Gordon link, I had the Tarp buttoned down tight as the wind was gusting to 20+ mph. She rode the storm out just fine.

I made the original stand in about 2 hours from scratch with a couple of change ups. If I had to do it again I could make one in about 30 min to 1 hour. If you need it more packable then there are a few people who have added other threads that allow shortening the poles into segments. Just search DYI Tensahedron Stand.

This is a quick and easy method, however the delivery of the aluminum surplus masts will probably not meet your timeline.

The above image is how I have used mine, a tarp can just as easily be draped over the poles, each pole is about 4-foot long.

I love my Bipod style stand. All my poles are 7' but I have a few extension pieces as well in case I need a longer hang (better with my bridge). It fits most of my tarps fine and I can even hang with my monster Kelty Noah's 12 if I put both extensions on the ends.

The tensa style stands look great until you're somewhere you can't pound stakes (parking lot, hangar, etc.).

No need. Tie off to a vehicle, cooler, etc. Fairly low line tension.
