Introducing 1.0 oz MONOLITE Ripstop Nylon Mesh

Had a few hours yesterday to sew the Monolite hammock..

Very easy to work with as others have mentioned. Doesn't compress as much as other fabrics.. the end gather is substantially larger than any other fabric I have worked with.

I am pleasantly surprised at the comfort this crazy light fabric offers. I was expecting it to be extremely stretchy. I found being able to see the underquilt valuable. I just bought a HG Phoenix and its' maiden voyage was under the Monolite. I see a massive gap at the foot end that I would have surely missed under a more opaque fabric.

I'll have to spend a few nights back-to-back to really determine whether it's a viable option for multiday trips or if it's just a novelty.

Still have to add the side pull outs so I haven't weighed it yet.

If it proves comfortable I am going to add a removable Half Wit style bug net..

Edit... Done. With side pull outs and dynaglide CLs it weighs exactly 8 ounces in a DCF bishop bag.

Does anyone know if this fabric is downproof?

I’d love to try out a heavier version of this for a hammock if it were still translucent. I prefer something firmer, but the see-thru part is still cool.

I can't say for sure, but my guess having worked with it is...no.

I should have updated my post above...

After about two dozen nights using the Monolite, it failed catastrophically... Click the pic below for more info..

I just ordered a rather expensive custom monolite myself… this scares me. Was there an 'event' that caused this, or was this strictly from 'typical' use?

Thanks for the quick response. I just did a bit more searching and found it : /
Im pressing the limit at 200 (almost even) and this really worries me. I kinda wish I had seen this before placing the order. It was just so attractive for opacity/pack volume/weight that I HAD to have it. Now I feel like I may have inadvertently burned a bunch of money. Now Im gonna have to search for success stories to ease my panic.

Don't give up completely. Lots of folks have Monolite hammocks, but how many pictures of failure have been posted?
Consider using any ultralight hammock at home or an overnight with easy bailout. Take a more robust hammock for longer treks.

    There was no ‘event’.
Nothing (I mean nothing) in my pockets

I didn’t bounce in it. Didn’t flop into it.

I’m well within the weight limits.

I made it so can vouch for the build and I made maybe ten hammocks before this one.

Having dismantled it since the failure, I can tell you the hems were all intact and the failure originated in the field of the hammock body somewhere. There was no ripstop.. it ripped hem to hem.

I would not say don’t use this fabric for a hammock, it was really comfortable.. but I would caution not to use it on a longer trip with no easy bailout. I was lucky that Jolly was parked at a nearby trailhead and had an extra hammock. My car was about 13 miles away and it was getting dark.
