Question Amok Draumr 3.0 Pros and Cons

As a side sleeper, I really want to try this hammock, but funds are always an issue and I would hate to buy it and it not work out. So for all of you that have tried one I would love to hear your thoughts. Some of my biggest questions are:

    1. since you can't use an underquilt, how does the pad work with temps around zero degrees?

    2. How well does the tarp work that comes with it for inclement weather? What about wind?

    3. Can you use a snake skin with it?

    4. Do you have to use a ridgeline with it?

    5. Anyone on the shorter end try it and what are your thoughts? I'm 5'5".

    6. How does a sleeping bag or over quilt work with it?

Anything else you wish you knew before you purchased one? Thanks for any input.

    1) it depends on your pad. I've got a synmat 9, and it's just fine down to -13

    2) the tarp works just fine. I've had mine in rain, blowing at 40mph, and it's fine. the only caveat is that if the wind is broadside into the head end, it can tap on your pillow. I fixed this with a super simple internal pole mod (2 beastee dee's, and a 130" pole from dutchware, total of $30ish and 5 minutes of work)

    3) snake skin, for the tarp? you could, but it has an attached stuff sack that it fits easily. also since the ridgeline is so much shorter than most hammocks, it's not as important.

    4) the ridgeline is built into the hammock, and is necessary.

    5) I'm 5'8 and it's great. the only issue I have is that it's not elegant to enter it with short legs (i have a 30" inseam). it's not hard, but it's not elegant. part of that is that I like my pad VERY firm, so I can't fold mine over the way most folks do. I just straddle the hammock, and lean back

    6) sleeping bag or quilt works just fine, like every other hammock or bed.

the only thing I'd really recommend is that you buy the pad you find the most comfortable. you need to make sure it has vertical baffles (not side to side)

I would also recommend getting a wide (25") pad, and not just the standard (20)

I find thicker 3" also works better than the thinner pads

but overall, I LOVE my Draumr. I love that it has nice pockets for my book reader, a bottle holder and miscellaneous pockets for stuff that's handy to have

What Tikker said... I would only add that you won’t have any trouble selling it if you decide it’s not for you...

Tikker, thanks so much for your insight. Our inseams are the same so that is what I need to know. I will definitely check out that mod if I go this route.

As for the snake skin, I just love it once I discovered it. I guess it seems like a novelty to me. And I snake skin both my tarp and hammock together. I have even done the under quilt with them once when I forgot to take it off on breakdown.

shug, Saw your videos and loved them. But sector seven is known to have some people of questionable reputation.

yeah, that won't be an option at all with a draumr. you're going to have to remove and pack the pad anyway

honestly, almost nothing from a gathered end transfers to the amok, other than sleeping the piney woods

the pole mod on this tarp is literally a 5 minute mod but 100% not needed. I did it simply cause all the other cool kids were doing it and I wanted in on the fun.

but, it really helps in a strong wind

Hey Shug, do you think the superfly provides better coverage?
