    Cool Ordered a Sparrow!

After mulling over all the different options and changing my mind about the details dozens of times since last June, I finally ordered a Sparrow and wanted to share the details of the order, as well as thank Deanna for all the personalized help. Dream Hammock really has a great group of people!

    Here's what I ordered:

    Sparrow
    Net-Overcover
    Length: 10ft
    Width: 63
    Layers: Double
    Outside: 1.2oz MTN-XL Dark Olive
    Inside: 1.2oz MTN-XL Foliage
    Overcover: 1.1oz Ripstop Dark Olive
Head Vent: Asym Vent-One Side For Right Lay
    Foot Vent: XL Peak Vent
    Lay Direction: Right

    Continuous Loop: Head-Black Foot-Silver
    Gear/Hand Loops: Red Both Ends
    UQ Hooks: Black Reflective
    Tie Out Hooks: Black Reflective

    Ridgeline Organizer: Removable
    Peak Shelf: 2
    Open Top Pocket
    Stuff Sack: Olive Drab

Zipper Hoods: Ripstop Head-Black Foot-Dark Olive
    Zipper Pulls: Black Reflective

    Sleeve Sack RTS: Olive Green

Needless to say, I'm really excited about this!

I'm also interested in hearing about anyone's experiences with the Asym Vent, especially if it's in combination with either the regular sized Peak Vent or XL Peak Vent at the foot end. My thinking is that the height differential with the vents might help with air flow and perhaps reduce condensation in colder weather.

    Regards,

    Sleepy

    Question

So, I have a question for everyone regarding the dimensions of my Sparrow.

What I've ordered is currently 10' long, 63" wide. I really wanted to keep it at 10' since I've run into issues at campgrounds where the selection of trees was very limited without encroaching on someone else's reserved site, and on a few occasions have ended up with trees that were so close together that the gathered ends of my HH were nearly right up against the trees. My HH is just under 10' long and the HH website says that it's 59" wide, and I've always had a good night's sleep in it.

But Deanna and Randy have told me that they haven't built too many 10' long Sparrows and have suggested that an 11' long, 58" or so wide build might be at least a bit more comfortable based on my height. They're really doing everything they can to make sure that I'm not disappointed with the final hammock, which I really appreciate--best customer service I've ever seen, hands down!

My question is, does anyone have any experience with a wide, 10' long Sparrow or something similar? For perspective, I'm 5' 10.5" tall and about 225 lbs, though I've been bringing my weight down slowly but steadily over the last 18 months (down from 286 in July 2017) and fully expect that weight to continue to go down.

Thanks in advance for any experiences you can relate, or ideas or suggestions you might have!

    Thumbs up Trust the Smurfs!

Well, it's been about a week since I posted my question and, while it's been viewed a fair number of times, no one replied. So I inferred from that that no one has any experience with a 10' long, wide Sparrow or something they might consider to be similar to that. Therefore, after reading many more posts in the DH subforum, I decided to do what I should have done to begin with and follow the guideline that seems to be the consensus:

"Trust the Smurfs! They will guide you!"

So I discussed the hammock with Deanna a bit more and decided to take her recommendation to make my Sparrow 11' long and 60" wide. Decision made!

    Now comes the waiting...

You definitely want that Sparrow to be 11'!

It's going to pair up nicely with that SF. If an 11' hammock doesn't fit between the tress, then the tarp certainly wouldn't fit.

Yeah, that's a good point that I actually hadn't considered--and I feel a bit dumb for not doing so.

I'm so used to the hammock being the limiting factor with the standard HH fly, since the fly doesn't extend very far beyond the gathered ends and attaches to the hammock's integral suspension ropes. So even in those really tight hangs, it wasn't a problem to rig up my HH fly.

But you're absolutely right, the Superfly is substantially longer. I just used it for the first time last weekend and I'm now even more happy that I trusted the Smurfs!

I'm 5'9" 170 lb and have a Darien (#6235) that is 10' 64" wide 1.7 Robic single layer and it remains my fave. Just feels locked in on the diagonal with minimal to zero calf ridge. I have identical in Robic 1.2 (#7111) and it is similar but a bit lighter in weight and lower packed volume.

    Be luvvin' my Dream Hammocks.

    cmoulder,

I checked out the pictures of your hammocks at the DH site--they look awesome and sound super comfy! Based on comparing our respective heights and weights, I think I went with the right choice with the length. My original choice of 10' long and 63" wide probably wouldn't have been as good a fit.

Do you find the 1.2 oz Robic to be stretchy at all? My Sparrow will have 2 layers of that, so I'm curious.
