My warbonnet cloudburst is like a sponge

I tried one of these silNylon tarps and like you didn't care for the sponge like quality. I now use a SimplyLightDesigns 12ft Winter Haven with my Warbonnet Ridgerunner and I really like this tarp. I use this tarp on 90% of my trips.

Have you checked out DD hammocks? I think all of theirs are silpoly and they have MANY different sizes. Prices are very reasonable aspecially with their 2 day shipping from Europe. Here

I have a Thunderfly in silpoly. Last hang, took it down in the rain (into a mesh sleeve) and squeezed out a fair amount of water. When I got home, I stretched it out in the garage to dry overnight. The material wasn't soaked through, but it did retain water from surface tension. Took a few hours to dry, but no where near as long as my old silnylon tarps. Not at the point to drop the big bucks for DCF, but I'm sold on silpoly over silnylon.

My silpoly tarp does seem to soak up some water. But it dries out very fast- so it's not really an issue for me. As long as I stay dry, that's all that really matters!

I suppose I should update this thread. Order placed for a Winterdream from Underground Quilts. Haven't received yet, but they've been great. Even gonna install some loops under the tarp like the cloudburst to hook bug net, which is a feature I'd miss.

I've come to that conclusion. My silpoly Thunderfly really holds the water.

Hate to be a kill joy here but.... Unless I was camping for a few days with continuous rain, Never had half the issues I am reading...
Yes of course they take on some weight but I was always dry and very happy.. That being said, I did purchase a thunderfly silpoly..

Ack! I just sprung for a silnylon minifly instead of the poly. My old silnylon tarp was from Speer, and I don't recall significant absorption issues with it... does silnyon vary that much from manufacturer to manufacturer, or batch to batch?

Like others have said, the important thing is that I'm dry.

I bought an Absorber towel which is pretty amazing for drying my car. I just got a second one to cut into a smaller piece and use that for backpacking. It's not a huge deal, but taking 30 seconds to walk around and dry it off will just make me feel better. It's nice to set up dry as well.

My superfly just sat in the rain for 2 days straight in my back yard. It is silpoly and it was bone dry inside, took it down shook it off and hung it in the garage, turned on a box fan on low and it was totally dry in about 3 hours.
