With my mini-whoopie this is essentially what I am doing. It doesn't have a fixed eye where one would normally be found, but rather a continuation of the Amsteel tail that attaches to CL with a J-bend. (Becket won't work Amsteel-Amsteel!) So you can attach the J-bend very close to the bury and end up with a total length, including tree strap, of about 14 inches. And that's only on the foot end. Any shorter than that and it'd be easier just to J-bend tree strap straight to CL. And anyway, for most setups the tarp isn't going to fit if it's that tight!

Well, obviously you're free to use different specs, but I don't think that Samson's recommendations are overkill for our purposes. 7/64" AmSteel Blue has a minimum breaking strength of 1,400 lbs. With Samson's splicing recommendations the whoopie slings will retain about 70% of that strength. That would mean a minimum breaking strength of 980 lbs. For hammocking purposes, we usually use a safety factor of 5. Which would mean 196 lbs. Obviously you can use a lower safety factor, and those heavier than 196 lbs who are still using 7/64" whoopie slings already do. Just know what you're doing when you are already over the recommended weight limit AND start shortening buries.
Thank you all for the great information! Based on what I'm hearing here, I'll shoot for a 8" bury. I'll save a few inches and will still feel secure hanging from it.
Remember also, you can connect whoopie straight to GE hammock channels with the fixed eye, thereby eliminating the CL. Some people don't like that because the whoopie can't be removed conveniently if it's wet, sappy or dirty, but it is an option.

Finally got around to trying this. Ended up with about an 8" bury on a whoopie that ranges in length between 16" and 29". Not bad for a first attempt!
