Why are my feet so cold?!

    Hello,

This weekend I did a very windy and cold trip up to Mt Greylock In Massachusetts. A couple of weeks ago, I did another trip on the AT to Riga Shelter in CT. I just like beautiful sunrises. I digress...

On both cases, my feet were very cold. This is something I'm not used to when I used to sleep on the ground. I've isoltard that it isnt my bag - I used and EE Enigma rated to 20 degrees and I sleep with clean socks. Tested this quilt in a tent to isolate that it wasnt the quilt and I slept great.

In my hammock however, same quilt different story.

I have a blackbird double with a 20 degree wookie (full length UQ) and use the same quilt same ckean sock strategy and I wake up with my feet freezing...

I'm 5'9 so I'm not longer than the insulated part of my UQ...

Sounds like the wind was a factor from reading your other post.
Were your feet warm when you crawled in the hammock? This is important.

    - Lose-fitting,thick, dry socks
    - Keep those socks in your jacket/shirt close to body for a bit to keep them warm right up until you are in the hammock, then put them on
    - Down/insulated booties are nice
    - Use a hot water bottle, like a Nalgene, at the foot end. Or even just to pre-warm the quilt if you don't want to sleep with that in there.
    - When you're going to bed, make sure your feet are totally dry. They have more sweat glads than anywhere else on your body. You may think they're dry, but could still be clammy. After taking off my day socks, I kick them around a little to air out.

here was my setup a few weeks ago... looks similar to what it was this weekend. but i think i'm missing something... my feet shouldn't be that cold. funny thing is the only part of my feet that were cold were whatever part would have been touching the bottom or outside of my top quilt...

i tried to attach a picture. if it doesn't work i'll try again.

I have this issue in gathered ends sometimes, and the only thing I can think of is that when you dial in the proper hang (especially in a warbonnet) you hang the foot end higher than the head end, so consequently your feet end up a bit higher than you normally would in a bed or on the ground

if your circulation in your feet is less than optimal (mine is that way now) this is the result

I never have this issue in my Draumr, but one out of 5 times, i have it in my sunroom hammock (whose hang does NOT change at all, ever)

only thing I can come up with

I can't tell for sure but it looks like your feet/legs are going well beyond the end of the underquilt. Or is that just the hammock material?

I also had this probem. I tried loose fitting wool socks, then down booties. My feet were still cold. Finally, I tried no socks or footwear at all. Works great for me! My feet just sweat so much that, no sooner have I put on the socks or down booties, then they're wet in 15 minutes. With no footwear, my feet are able to dry, and they stay dry all night.

well, i'm pretty sure it's the footbox but, staring at this picture leads me to believe maybe i'm not setting the foot end of the hammock high enough. additionally, my ridgeline i completely loose in this picture.

seems like i might need to revisit some pointers on how to set the hammock up. i'm not giving up though. were it not for my cold feet, i would have gotten amazing sleep. especially swaying in the 35-40 mph wind gusts this weekend.

I took a play out of the Shug Playbook and removed my too tight outer socks Friday night/Sat. a.m. when my feet got cold.I was afraid that the very light weight liners would not do the job but it was amazing once I took the tight layer off.Won't make that mistake again.Thanks,Shug.
