How expensive is it to get everything you need for something like this?
1-2 thousand depending on what your needs are and what equipment you want.
If you watch the classified ads at wintertrekking you can get in for half the cost
For a hammock hot tent....your pretty much having to build your own then buy a stove
If your serious oogle the heck out of things over at wintertrekking and or ask questions there or just PM me.
When you get the right gear/equipment including what you wear...hot tenting makes winter camping easy peasy and super enjoyable.

That's a great report! Photos are good.
In any case, you already have experience of hiking in the cold season. You can tell us which of the options for winter tents will be better. I have my first trip to the mountains and it will be exactly cold, but I am skeptical about the advice of shopkeepers or reviews from the Internet.

The easiest without DIY stuff is a Smokehouse hot tent ($500), kni-Co stove (~$200), then misc. accessories like straps, stakes, guy lines, poles. Can probably do a nice solid setup for about $800-900

A friend had a GoLite Shangri-La 6 and a SeekOutside folding SS stove. 5 lb for each, and backpackable for a group effort. With our winter hammock set ups it was a lot of fun. 10 degrees in these pictures, Presidential Range NH north slope.

The one thing that worries me the most are all the holes in that expensive tarp caused by embers.

Top tier pictures! Thanks for sharing, the mountain view is just breathtaking!!! Super jealous because I won't have time to leave the city for the next few months because of crazy work schedule!

The spark arrestor should help. Being close to the stove, from what I can tell in the pic, it will burn hotter and not build up creosote much. That's the intent. Also, it's recommended to have about 15" of pipe above your peak so the embers blow away and/or cool off before becoming an issue. Their pipe here is LONG! That's a good thing regarding hot embers and also promotes a better draw for the fire anyway. The only potential downside there is it becomes more tipsy, especially in wind. It's sort of a balancing act.

I know it's pretty hard to keep a tent warm without burning it down. Always be very careful with that. I use a small space heater with my Coleman 8-Person Instant Tent. Works pretty well.

I've never had any issues or worries about burning my silnylon hot tent down. The chimney vents from the side about 6 feet out with a spark arrestor/cap. But, I could easily see how things can get out of hand with too much heat and flame. This past winter I went a little overboard with the birch bark to get my fire going. I had the top of the stove and chimney glowing red.

Two winters ago we hit a high of 118 farenheit inside when the wood finally hit the point of combustion. A little scary, but we just opened up the doors to the tent and let the fire do its thing. Hot tenting in winter is a game changer, but it's alot of work. Once you setup and have a stash of wood for a couple days, you can just chill out and enjoy your time in the woods.
