looking for a cheap deal on a top quilt

For years I used the Walmart pad as my bottom insulation and slept in my hammock with a sleeping bag. All those years, I saw posts on here talking about how much better an under quilt was. I finally bought one from a UGQ sale and saw what everybody else was talking about - pure sleeping bliss. Now I want to buy a top quilt so I don't have to carry my sleeping bag for that purpose, but cracker cheapness runs deep in me. The best deal I can find is at Hammock Gear...can anyone recommend a better deal?

I think for the quality and value it's really hard to beat the Econ Burrow...

If a 40 degree quilt is warm enough for you in FL, I do not think you'll find a better value on a new item than the $130 Econ Burrow from HG.

You could DIY a topquilt from a Costco down throw, which would be much cheaper. Or you could buy something off Etsy that is likely to be someone else's DIY Costco down throw creation. See link below.

Do you sew? Until I decided on a quality topquilt I took my old sleeping bag took the zipper and hood off and sewed the edges from the zipper. It worked and I still have it as an extra.

The Hammock Gear Econ might be the least expensive quality top quilt you could get. Maybe wait for one to come up on the for sale forums? I'd bet those econ quilts will hold their value extremely well though, so you might only be saving a couple dollars.

The Wind Hard quilt would suit you well. Google.

There are some inexpensive synthetics out there (Amazon) that would be plenty warm enough for Florida if you really wanted to save a few bucks. I was surprised at how warm the ENO Spark ($99 from REI) was but the Velcro closure at the footbox was really uncomfortable. I can't imagine you wouldn't be happier spending the extra $30 for an Econ Burrow from HG though.

Snug Pak has some cheaper options. I use a Jungle Blanket in warm weather. Packs smaller than my sleeping bag. Probably good into the fifties.

Yeah, since you're in FL, the Snugpaks are probably the way to go. To me, the Econ Burrows are a screaming deal for a true backpacking TQ. I think some other makes are adopting the same concept - slightly higher weight for significant savings. But a lot of folks like the Snugpaks for what they are, which seems to be a decent cheap option for camping, and can certainly be used for backpacking.

We have a couple Snugpak Jungle blankets and I still use them in the hot summer months when you don't need any blanket until you've been laying in the hammock for a few hours. Then later, when that bit of chill starts to set in, I'll pull the Jungle blanket out of the peak shelf or sidecar and use it over at least part of me. Being just a flat blanket and not a quilt with a footbox makes it easier to stick a leg or two out.

In the colder months, the Jungle blankets go into our vehicles in case of emergency.

They're about the size of a 1L Nalgene bottle when in the stuff sack, but without cranking down on the compression straps.
