Cool Finally bit the bullet and got my first hammock

Back in March I asked about the Sheltowee Boone ZIP hammock and for Christmas I finallly got the 40º version. I hope to give it’s first test run this weekend and i need to find an adequate tarp for it. So excited to finally be able to get off the ground and quicker setups/breakdowns.

Awe, the addiction begins. I sleep so good in mine I hang it between my horse trailers at home sometimes just to get a good night sleep

I hung the hammock for the first time and I need to do some more learning on hanging a hammock. I went to a nearby park. Eyeballed a couple trees got the straps in place, worked the angle, thought everything was good, and when I sat down, bonk, backside onto the ground. Re-adjusted the straps higher, tried again still too low. Gave the straps a good pull and noticed the tree was bending. Oops, they were too skinny and bending. About 6-8 inches in diameter. Well, guess I need to find fatter trees. Lesson learned now to find better suited trees.

    Hey 30,

Welcome. If you have not already, get Derek Hansen's "The Ultimate Hang" Book. It will help you out a lot. Derek also has a website by the same name. Also watch Shug's videos on Youtube. Both resources are super informative and entertaining.

You are now on the slippery slope............enjoy the ride.

    Be safe.

You may find that it is not always quicker set-up and such. Finding the right trees with proper spacing, no widow-makers hanging over and getting the right hang and UQs set and setting your tarp; that it can take as long or more than a tent that you just set and toss your gear in.
But your comfort and sleep quality is so worth it. I often sleep 10 hours or more in my hammock. You'll feel more rested and hike stronger and sit under your tarp in a rainstorm watching the rain whilst dry.
