MN > All State Parks>All year - What is your favorite hammock campsite park and site number?

Favorite spots in State and National Forests as well?

I really like Afton backpacking site #21 for a quick weekend. There are plenty of healthy trees 12' to 20' feet apart in good proximity to the firepit and picnic area without being too close. Good ground surface with no large rocks or anything under the hammock. The site is tucked nicely back into the woods so it feels like you have an acre to yourself. Hiking to the site is idyllic, with views of the rolling prairie and St. Croix river valley. The wood pile, water, and vault toilet are on the main path. 21 is on a side path (see diagram) that doesn't get human foot traffic, but there's a good chance you'll see a deer walking through the woods around dusk.

I'd tell you but then everyone would know where it is

However as a runner up and my absolute favorite state park, George Crosby Manitou, any site down by the river. One of the only state parks completely devoted to hiking and backpacking I've ever run across.

Exactly my thinking. I will share that is north east from Duluth and allows me to sleep with the sounds of Lake Superior in my ears.

Haha, Okay. What's your 4th favorite site?

Edit: Or does anyone have site numbers to stay away from? No good trees, etc.

I’m going to be at Maria State Park this weekend. I’m taking my 12 year old daughter on her first backpacking trip. I’ll be in spot B1.

This happens to be really close to my house so I went out yesterday to see what the spot looks like and it’s fantastic!

I also looked at spots B2, B3, and, B6 on the way in and all of those would easily support hammocks.

Can you check on the group site while you’re there please? I’m on the look out for a group hang site.

Too many to list within 2 hours of the Twin Cities. Along the big lake they call Gitche Gumee, #8 at Split Rock is very nice. Never been to Afton but will check it out some day.

Frankly, I prefer dispersed camping in the many state forests. I am agoraphobic so my favorite spots are where I don't see a soul for days.

Janette, the toad to the group camp area was closed. It should hoped once it drys up a little. I wasn’t able to hike into either sites due to my daughter having foot pains during our hike. The next time I’m there I will take a peak and report back to you on how it looks for a group of hammocks
