    Hello from Las Vegas, Nevada

Howdy from LvRascal! I just ordered my first serious hammock at the age of 62 years young. Looking to see if there are any hammockers in the Las Vegas Valley. I decided that at 62 I've gotten too old to sleep on the ground anymore. I've been an avid hiker and occasional backpacker for the last 30 years or so. I've never been fast but I keep putting one foot in front of the other and eventually get where I'm going. Recently hiked up the North Loop Trail on Mt Charleston to Raintree at 9,800+ feet and also up Trail Canyon before the first snow of the season (with a 50+ lb pack both times). I tend to take more than I need for a day hike in case things go wrong, plus at my age, I need the strength training to ensure I can carry a big pack on backpacking trips. Mostly I hike solo and am looking to do some overnight trips.

I'm also a General class ham radio operator, KC7ZDM, and a member of the Clark County ARES and RACES groups (Amateur Radio Emergency Service/Radio Amateur Emergency Service). RACES when activated operates under FEMA while ARES can be activated by the Governor or the county Office of Emergency Management. I also hold a GMRS license, WQYQ598.

Other hobbies include woodworking, building the occasional piece of furniture or whatever takes my fancy, reading novels of science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction.

Welcome from Nashville, Tennessee! I made two sojourns in 2018 to Las Vegas, one was three weeks, one was a month. My first times to the Southwest. Have a daughter who's a captain in the Air Force out there. A chaplain. Back in college days, she thru-hiked the AT.

Wife and I came out last Christmas/New Year's to visit and haul stuff from our house to hers. In Aug/Sep we came out for me to thru-hike the John Muir Trail.

Anyway, have enjoyed my visits, but not a place I'd want to live. I'm too used to all the green in the South!!! LOL But you have come to the right cyberspace place for all things hammock camping. Jump right in, the water's fine. And here, there's plenty.

Thanks! I've lived here for ~23 years now and fell in love with the place. Not the casinos or the Strip (don't gamble or drink) but the landscape. Mt Charleston is 11,918 feet, loads of great trails and at least one bristlecone pine that's between 3,000 and 5,000 years old, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, etc. I just hike the White Rocks Loop out in Red Rock last Thursday and got snowed on for the first time (at ~5,500 feet elevation literally 15 miles from the Las Vegas Strip)! It definitely takes some getting used to, being able to see all the life in the desert. It's amazing how it changes with the elevation too.

Out towards the Sheep Range up Deadman Canyon is an old log cabin on the way up to Hayford Peak. I've hiked out there many times, stayed overnight in it once. When it's 110 to 115 in Las Vegas it will be ~80 up on Mt Charleston. Too hot then to hike in Red Rock or the Valley of Fire. Cool petroglyphs at the latter BTW.

Contact me some time if you're going to be in town with some time. Perhaps we can get together for a hike!

    Cheers!

    Rich
