Thumbs up Hello from eastern Iowa

Well this weekend is my 1 week anniversary of lurking on HF, so I guess if I'm going to hang around here (literally) maybe I should say hello.
I'm new to hanging and camping in general (except 3 years in the military). I've learned alot here and the forum members seem friendly and willing to help those who are just starting out. Hopefully I can participate in one of the hangs here in the midwest this season.
I have already sent out my HH exped for the 2Q & ZQ #2 zipper mod that has been so widely recommended on the forum. Next up is to get a better tarp.

Welcome rockape! I'm not too far away from you. Once you get your equipment squared away, maybe we could meet up and hang at Mississippi Palisades. They have a few hike-in campsites.

Welcome Rockape. Nice set up having the 2Q/ZQ zipper mod on the HH. You'll like it. I'm south of you in the St. Louis area. Maybe we can get a group together for a hang somewhere in between us.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone. Knowing that there are other hangers in my area willing to share their expertise is a great help. I hope to meet up with you after I get everything together and the kinks ironed out.
One thing I'm scratching my head over now is that I'm going to switch out my stock suspension to whoopie slings. I'm thinking of going with 8' slings, but would it be better to go with 10' or longer just in case? What are other mid-westerners using? I understand that you can always shorten your slings, but you can't make them longer.

Even 6' Whoopie slings would be plenty, along with 5' or 6' tree huggers. My slings are about 7' long and I've got 6' tree huggers and have never come close to needing more.

You should be just fine with the 6 footers. I use 6 foot tree straps and have 8 foot whoopie slings and have way too much on every hang. I'm keeping track of how much is unused in all my hangs and will shorten the whoopie sling accordingly one of these days.
