    Side by Side Hanging

Not sure where this belongs but it will be a DIY project ,So here I am

I am looking into setting up two hammocks to hang side by side using spreader bars.

My question is do the two people hanging have to be relatively the same weight for this to work ?

Can a 190 Lb Grandpa hang with a 50 Lb granddaughter or grandson ? Or will the lighter person rise to the top like a balance scale ?

    Thanks

I don't believe the weight of the individuals matters much- as long as your spreader bars are strong. There are plenty of folks who hang side-by-side with their children, and seem to have no issues. Here are a couple resources to get you started:

My wife weight 70lbs less than I do and there aren’t any issues. One thing you’ll have to do is hang the heavier person’s hammock proportionately higher to compensate so that you both end up relatively even.

I'd really like to do this but my wife is 100lbs and I'm 225 and I have the same concern. I imagine myself catapulting her into the air as I get in my hammock, or dropping her into the ground as I get out.

I'm 200 lbs and my daughter is around 70. We have had no issues using a head end spreader bar with two BB XLC's. There can be a big swing when the heavier person gets out of their hammock, so it's best to exit carefully. I have more trouble getting the tarp coverage just right than the actual hammock hang. I'd also note that if either person is a light sleeper they may notice any fidgeting the other person makes during the night since you're both connected.

I've hung with just my son (40 lbs) and with both daughters (combined 96 lbs) in a double dutch system with no issues. Yes, they are a little higher, but not significantly. I have seen, but can't find a recent post where someone made a couple guy lines to act as a spreader bar tamer. I haven't tried that yet, but it looked like an interesting solution to keep the ends of the spreader bar from poking into your tarp. I will say a 12' tarp minimum in a necessity though. I currently use a Dutch 12' Winter Hex and it provided ample coverage.
