DIY - Burrow / Pod design

    Hi All,

I am new to this forum so apologise if my etiquette is not quite there yet!

I am raising this thread having seen the delightfully eccentric Shug demonstrate a modified sleeping bag being used as a pod down to -40F. Whilst I am not necessarily looking to go quite that far - the UK being the temperate place that it is - the concept is appealing in its simplicity and packability.

Has anyone worked on this before? Shug used a V-shaped section to expand a sleeping bag. This strikes me as a relatively simple thing to make?

There are some pods and hammock sleeping bags out on the market. Can't vouch for them as I have never tried them.

    Shug,
Thanks for the quick reply and the pointers. They both look like good options particularly the outdoor vitals one. Also good options to make for my own if the desire takes me

Have you played at all more with your pod system?

I use my pod almost every deep winter here in Minnesota for sub 0º camping. Though I did not last year as I was testing a -10ºF UQ.

Ah, I only just checked the date on the Pod videos on YT and realised that they were made back in 2013! My bad!

Do you use the same one as featured in those vids or have you moved on?

Not Shug, but I bet he used the same system, which is nothing more complicated than some of his UQs and TQs layered inside his zipped up Western Mountaineering 20F sleeping bag. He did this originally- I think - without even the benefit of the zip in side wedge, and still had success. But the zip in wedge gave him more luxury room, allowed more diagonal, though he was OK on the diagonal to start with. Shug please just correct me if I am in error.

I used the Speer Pea Pod with great success for many years before I stupidly sold it. This was a commercial model designed to swallow the hammock from head end knot to foot end knot(depending on hammock length, of course). I probably liked this the best OVERALL of anything I ever used, though they all have pros and cons. But I never had a cold moment in that thing from the 1st hour of trying it. What it had over all others was bomb proof draft control. Just add layers for when you needed something more than what the Pea Pod provided all by itself.

There is a vendor showing that these are still available, and I would get another one, except I have never been able to contact anyone at the company in over a year of trying. I think their health may have put them out of business. Although, some one here just made an order for some line or something inexpensive. And they finally received it. But they were never able to contact anyone about that order at anytime. That would make me nervous with a $400 order, so I have not done so. These are incredible products if they can be bought.

It is exactly the same though I change the uq/tq inside the pod depending on temps.
Normally my HG 30º TQ and my Frankenquilt 20º UQ.
