    Going to Ground

No I am not abandoning my hammock. But in our new location in central Alberta there are very few trees making the likelihood of going to ground higher each outing.

Has Dutch ever considered a GTG specialized hammock (i.e. a different more rugged material or shell section on the bottom)? Perhaps a d-ring on the outside of the bug net to pull it to poles.

I know it’s kind of a niche thing. Any recommended Dutch gear to help?

Molly Mac Gear actually made a hammock specifically for those who often need to go to ground. I’ve never tried it, but I was reminded of it today while surfing.

There are several companies that already make the combo hammock and tent you describe.

How about just using a ground cloth, or a double layered hammock on a pad? The double layer would help protect the primary inner layer that takes your weight, but I would still want a pad or ground cloth or both under the hammock. Of course, unless you are hyper-tough, you are going to need a pad anyway.

Great info all. I think I’m leaning towards Shug’s approach. Just need to find me some trash compactor bags. The Molly MAC looks pretty good though.

We had to go to ground one night on the Middle Fork Salmon. We carried Neo-aire pads for such. Used the ground cloth, tarp with hiking poles, and the hammocks for a bivy. The hammock also keeps the pad from slipping out from under you at night.
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

How about a dedicated ground sheet that zippers on the Chameleon symmetrical top cover with moonlite? That would be cool.

Now you’re thinking! Or even with the mesh top.
